More than meets the eye
By Jessica
How hard can it be to lay out a rectangle? With keeper boxes and goal boxes and center circles and 90 degrees at every corner? Actually, pretty hard. And the last thing you want to do is start painting a field and get most of the way done and realize you messed up! Now what?! This book told us how to do it with simple instructions and we made no errors in laying out our fields for the season. We bought this book to help out club not just lay out full size fields, but also sizes for different age groups and small field practices. Very, very useful and very, very worth it. Great stuff.

What a time saver! Our club used to take a whole weekend to lay out our fields for our different leagues. With this book and kit to guide us, we cut that time significantly. With clear cut directions and pictures, this book makes a tedious job a lot easier and quicker. Whoever came up with this idea came up with a winner.

The Three Waves of Volunteers and the New Earth, by Dolores Cannon

This is a fascinating narrative that reveals the cosmic forces that have been in play over the past 66 years. Help has come from the outside to preserve the human race.

In 1945 when the atomic bombs, our "protectors" and "watchers" in outer space saw that Earth was on a collision course with disaster. The prime directive of non-interference prevented them from taking any action, but then they came up with a brilliant plan to save Earth and assist her in her ascension. They couldn't interfere from the "outside," but maybe they could influence from the "inside." So the call went out for volunteers to come and help. "Earth is in trouble - who wants to volunteer?"

Dolores Cannon, through her hypnosis work has discovered three waves of these volunteers. Some have come direct from the "Source" and have never lived in any type of physical body before. Others have lived as space beings on other planets or other dimensions. Because all memory is erased upon entry to the Earth dimension, they do not remember their assignment. Thus these beautiful souls have a difficult time adjusting to our chaotic world. These souls have a vital role to play as they help all of the rest of us ascend to the New Earth.

2012 Explained
By Robin Landry
The Three Waves by Dolores Cannon is more of her amazing work in hypnotherapy where she works with ordinary people to discover out of the world information. Continuing her work that has built on past life regressions, Cannon has with her last four books, given us glimpses into the future. Using her own special technique of working directly with her subjects' subconscious, Cannon has learned of the nature of both our present and our future. What does the date of 2012 mean? Why are birds falling from the sky? Why are fish washing up onto our shores all over the world?

Cannon answers these questions and much more by asking her subjects' subconscious, the part of all us that is connected to the divine. Carl Jung called it the collective unconscious, while Edgar Cayce tapped into it to cure people of their illnesses and disease, while giving us a look into our past.

The Three Waves is about the waves of volunteers who've come to Earth during this critical stage of our development. Because of the non-interference directive that our elder brothers adhere to, beings from other worlds can't just land their space ships and give us the cure to all our ills. First of all, we wouldn't learn anything if they did, and secondly, they would be setting themselves up to be our gods, something that hasn't worked out well in the past.

In order to get around the prime directive, and yes, Star Trek was right, our alien cousins have sent out a call to any souls willing to be reincarnated here on Earth as this time in order to help us raise our collective vibrations. Many answered the call starting with the large group that we call the `Baby Boomers'. Next came many of those in their twenties and thirties, as the second wave, and now the children, higher vibrating souls who came out of love to help us.

Earth herself is going to be raising her vibration up to the fifth dimension. We have gone from a Schuman resonance of 7.8 up to what it is now at, 12. This higher vibratory level causes a `shaking loose' of what is old, negative and no longer needed. People are having old issues come to haunt them, where they are given the soul choice of either forgiving and transmuting their problems, or hanging to them to the point of even acting them out. As a result we see more people who seem to be `breaking apart' on a deep level and either changing their lives for the better, or succumbing to their fears. The nightly news if full of examples of people who couldn't handle whatever issues they have had buried, causing them to lash out in an uncontrollable rage.

Reading The Three Waves gives both a clue as to why our world seems to be going so crazy, and hope for the future. As the collective unconsciousness' all say, it's simply about choice. Every second of our lives were asked to choose between going towards the light, or the darkness, and in our choosing we create our future. The world will be divided, and a new world, just as the Bible says, populated with those who choose a new and better way of being. Those who choose to continue our broken way of being, where children starve and the rich rule, and the Earth is only there to exploit, will be given the world that they have created. What could be more fair?

Solid information.
By Carla Kaiser
This book answered tons of my questions about 2012 and the so-called Shift, Apocalypse, etc. Dolores does not use generic or ambiguous terminology. She straight up tells you what her research has indicated, and it is more explicit than anything else I've come across.

Ever since I saw a web video of Dolores discussing the Nostradamus stuff, I immediately trusted her but forgot about her until another author recommended Dolores' book The Custodians. I am glad I read The Custodians and The Convoluted Universe series prior to reading The Three Waves of Volunteers, but I don't think these are pre-requisites. The info in The Three Waves was easier for me to read and absorb. The material is also consistent with other authors' material about the Crystal Children, the Indigo Children, the Star People, etc.

There are some formatting issues with the Kindle version, for example there are a lot of quotation marks instead of apostrophes. I (did"t) let it bother me, because the information is solid and I am so glad that we are blessed with a reliable source of information about the big transition.

Thanks Dolores!

Not bad, some recycled material though *UPDATED 9/13/11*
By Roy Munson
I have been a fan of Dolores Cannon since the first time I read the Custodians. Since then I've read and re-read almost all of her books, especially those within the Convoluted Universe and Nostradamus Speaks series. To be clear, I was under the impression this was in a sense the next 'Convoluted Universe.' I understand this was not referenced in her title, however, I figured it would contain the natural overlap of information she had been updated with since her last book, and I was eager to have the latest information. Unfortunately for me, and those already very familiar with her work, there was a lot of redundancy and information from her previous books rehashed here in this book. That's not necessarily a bad thing, certainly not for a reader new to Dolores Cannon, as it provides proper context- I only wish I knew this before I ordered and learned there is another Convoluted Universe (book four) which will be released later this year. There are still some gems in here to glean, and as with all of her work, you will find yourself fascinated and drawn in even if you have already read much of the material before.

I am eagerly now anticipating the release of her Convoluted Universe Book 4. I believe it's more important now than ever that people have access to Dolores Cannon's work, and I am very appreciative and grateful for the information and work she has done. Hopefully she continues to do so. My one criticism of her work is that I do believe in her attempts to frame a positive future for humanity we are only reading and hearing about the heavily filtered cases which fit this paradigm. I remember a Coast to Coast interview she had where she stated something along the lines of being threatened for releasing information about the 'Cabal' referenced in her earlier works and interspersed in the Convoluted Universe series, and so she has made it a clear path away from delving into these issues. The truth is, we only grow from being able to confront our shadow sides. Most people are unaware or don't care to hear about the Franklin Scandal particularly because they don't want to admit there exists a very real and legitimate dark side of humanity which resides right along side the pretty faces and smiles we show the world each day. It's time for a change, I think we can sense that- the hows, when's, where's, who really knows, but the more we are able to accept personal responsibility within our lives the greater the promise of that change will be for the better. Keep up the good work Dolores!

**UPDATE**

I have received some feedback stating this book does NOT contain recycled material and would like to clarify that within the book itself (on page 451 to be exact) Dolores clearly states that Part III of this book is work taken directly from her PREVIOUS BOOKS. This includes 6 chapters and roughly 110 pages worth of reprinted material. If you are fine with this all the better; however, for those who doubt or disagree that there is recycled material, this is confirmed and admitted by the author herself. I feel that it is important for those considering the purchase of this book to be aware of this, it IS NOT to put down the book, and is also not the reason for the 4 stars.

Start: Punch Fear in the Face, Escape Average and Do Work that Matters, by Jon Acuff

Wall Street Journal best-selling author Jon Acuff reveals the steps to getting unstuck and back onto the path of being awesome.

Over the last 100 years, the road to success for most everyone has been divided into predictable stages. But three things have changed the path to success:

Boomers are realizing that a lot of the things they were promised aren’t going to materialize, and they have started second and third careers.

Technology has given access to an unprecedented number of people who are building online empires and changing their lives in ways that would have been impossible years ago.

The days of “success first, significance later,” have ended.

While none of the stages can be skipped, they can be shortened and accelerated. There are only two paths in life: average and awesome. The average path is easy because all you have to do is nothing. The awesome path is more challenging, because things like fear only bother you when you do work that matters. The good news is Start gives readers practical, actionable insights to be more awesome, more often.

Inspired some introspection that I wasn't anticipating. Worthwhile, overall.
By WEK
I learn from reading, but this is the first time I've learned from reviewing. As I prepared my write-up, I came to a shameful realization: I have a literary superiority problem. (That furious nodding sound you hear is my wife.) My review was going to begin with a disclaimer about how I generally don't read self-help books (or "personal development", or whatever you want to call them). I was then going to make a snide remark about how, as much as I really enjoyed the book and found it a valuable addition to my library, the author's fondness for all forms of the word "awesome" (especially "awesomeness") was tiresome and immature. Really? Who cares? I found it insightful, even (perhaps especially?) the simplest insights. I enjoyed it. And I need to get over myself.

Average. Not Awesome.
By vaxhack
Where to begin. My wife downloaded this book and we listened to it during a road trip this weekend.

It started well enough, but as chapter turned into platitude stuffed chapter, the eye rolling increased and the hope of a helpful book diminished. Basically, you have a guy who has moderate success for a few short years holed up in an office banging out an outline of how to be "awesome" even though he really hasn't done all that much himself. Most of the book isn't "wrong", but merely common sense ideas put into an outline and then expanded with personal experiences, cherry-picked studies and made-up platitudes about being awesome.

Wanna "Start"? Be prepare to write lists. There are lists of lists that he wants you to write down. Write down your abilities and assets. Write down your goals and dreams. Is this practical? Probably. Someone who sits down and does this will be encouraged to "start." After all, making a list is itself defined as "starting." Is making lists a ground-breaking idea or worthy of its own book? Are the lists he suggests more insightful than the lists suggested by thousands of other motivational book authors? Hardly. Hardly.

The author tries to protect himself from flaws in his logic or methods by using self-deprecating humor to point out that he isn't perfect. For instance, he mocks (accurately) such pithy, worthless statements we all seem to associate with motivational speakers like "Step out in faith" and "Follow your dreams and the universe will open doors...". This gives you the false hope that maybe THIS guy actually understands the frustration of listening to such nonsense. However, the author then proceeds to fill the book with his own, made up nonsense statements: "Don't focus on accomplishments, focus on awesome!" and "Chase your awesome!" and "Action always beats intention." (no duh. Sounds great though.)

Of course, the emperor wears no clothes. Merely mocking other's pithy statements, does not give you license to spew your own with immunity.

Amazon negative reviewers are "haters". Nothing constructive could possibly be gained from them. "Ignore the .004%!" is his message, repeated a couple of times in the book. Yet, there is one thing clear. The author will read this review. That much is very clear from his repeated references to Amazon reviews in this book: Asking for them; Counting them; Calculating percentages with them.

Unfortunately, listening to the audio version of this robs me of the satisfaction of throwing the book at a wall.

I guess one thing that really caused me to take this book with a grain of salt, is that the author admits that in 2007(ish) he was just a nobody who started working hard and after coming up with a popular blog idea, he did some speeches and was "found" by Dave Ramsey, who took a chance on giving him a job. That is his story. He mentions from going from giving speeches to just tens and hundreds of people before he met Dave to giving speeches to thousands after Dave put his power behind him. Now he is bestowing upon us minions the secrets of his great success.

To his credit, he admits this in the book, and even turns it into a point: you should stand on the shoulders of giants (in his case, Ramsey, of course, though I recall he initially says in the book that his "giant" is his father who is a preacher. That's nice and all melty inside my heart.)

But seriously, does anyone think that the author would be bestselling (should that or should it not have a hyphen?) without Ramsey? Even he admits no, crediting Ramsey as well as his father. However, he also takes credit for his own success in reference to the years (2-3? between 2007 and 2010 approximately) of work he did before Ramsey noticed him as the reason he was picked as the "chosen" one. The following quote isn't actually the author's, but it does convey the attitude dripping from the pages (or in my case, car speakers): "Yes, Ramsey put me over the top, but he picked me because I was such a busy little bee, and he saw my awesome potential. Me. Yes. I am awesome. He took a chance but really, he couldn't help himself. Any really smart man would have done the same thing. I mean, really! Look at me! You should try to be like me. Awesome. Maybe, maybe, you can. If you work hard and make lists. Like me. Awesome. Road to Awesome. More Awesome."

I am not giving this one star. That would be for just rotten ideas or obvious lies (mistakes like saying Terrell Owens caught over 1000 touchdowns (he didn't) I will give the benefit of the doubt and chalk up to bad editing)and as I indicated, these aren't horrible ideas, just common, every-day ideas badly presented.

I will give it something worse. Three stars. Because three stars is average. And that is where this book falls.

somewhat motivational, annoying style
By D. T. Kleven
I really like Dave Ramsey. I like his books, his financial advice, his radio show - EntreLeadership: 20 Years of Practical Business Wisdom from the Trenches is the best book on business that I've read, and I plan to read it again as my own business continues to grow. Dave has been plugging his guy Jon Acuff and really promoting the new book "Start!", so I read it, assuming that it would be helpful given the recommendations. I was very disappointed.

I almost didn't read the whole thing, I was so annoyed with the style and wasn't getting anything helpful from it. I kept thinking, "why am I wasting my time on this? I could be reading Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap... and Others Don't, or Guerrilla Marketing, 4th edition: Easy and Inexpensive Strategies for Making Big Profits from Your Small Business or anything by Seth Godin, or..." I slogged through the first 3 chapters and almost quit, but then I decided to read "just one more" and by that point, I was halfway done. Might as well finish, right?

My complaints are as follows:

It's really vague - he offers lots of cliches and vague platitudes. Not much concrete practical substance. His 5 main chapters had good titles, but unfortunately not much substance.

This seems like a book more about Jon than help for you or me. It is loaded with stories about his life. I think the book title could be titled "I'm Awesome! how a blogger got hired by Dave Ramsey and is now doing lots of public speaking and writing books." Very, very heavy on the personal anecdotes. It's one thing to use a personal story now and then to illustrate a point, but this book has more stories than points!

It has way too many pointless rabbit trails. It reads like a blogger with ADD compiled a bunch of random thoughts into a book. I found it incredibly annoying. Half the time, the rabbit trail serves no purpose whatsoever! None! Jon's brain went down the trail, so he figured he'd type it out so we could read it. I literally reread entire sections before concluding "that had absolutely nothing to do with his point." The book could have used a good editor, in my opinion.

His humor annoys me. Get a group of college students together for some group activity. You know the kid trying to be the stand-up comedian/ has a sarcastic comment for literally everything? That guy wrote a book titled "Start!".

In conclusion, maybe this book will help you. Maybe you love Acuff's blog and his other books (I've tried to read Stuff Christians Like, and I can't stand that one either). Maybe his style connects with you. Maybe the idea of Learning, Editing, Mastering, Harvesting and Guiding is helpful to you, regardless of how vague the actual content of these phases is. I wanted to like this book, but it just didn't work for me at all. I can't recommend it when there are so many more helpful books out there.

Great Core with Sleazy Filler
By James McPhate
I tried to come up with another title then "Great Core with Sleazy Filler" but couldn't. It nails this book perfectly.

There are great writing and composition tips. And the book reflects its message by using its own techniques. I can see the value of this, and can see that doing so would over-reach the natural tone of such a book. However, it's all the get-rich-quick, and over-the-top usage of "I've never told this secret to anyone before" types of manipulation that really disappoint. There are also claims with regards to hypnosis and psychology that are presented as "beyond doubt" and "proven" which are tenuous and no where near being such.

Near the end of the book Joe describes his mailing list, and how profitable it is, and then lists some emails he's sent to it. It felt like he had a cult of followers who are the same people who buy the "Get Rich in 15 Minutes a Day" programs (which sums up lots of his example sales copy in the book) and believe positive thinking and prosperity theologies are all that are need to succeed (usually described as get rich). Overall, Joe continually steps over my ethical lines of clarity and honesty.

Joe references Master Mind groups, which is a a Pseudo-Christian prosperity theology (New Though, Christian Science, etc.) and continually promotes his "The Attractor Factor" book. While the power of goal setting and visualization are undeniable, lets not forget about focus and work.

If you think you'll get more of the worlds limited resources because you sit in a circle and hold hands and wish for a larger house, then this book is definitely for you. Or go to his web site to find endorsements for products like "How to Get Lots of Money For Anything Fast!"

If you want to get some excellent writing and marketing tips, and can ignore the sleaze and tone done the excesses in your own writing, then this book is great as well.

The other strange thing is the reviewers. If you dig around, you'll find that they all seem to know each other, cross review, and peddle the same low-brow wealth creation or similar products. I actually discovered this book while looking at "Think Two Products Ahead", a book with over the top promotion on the Amazon page.

My final thoughts on the books content are on the marketing concepts in this book. This book tries to sell, whereas most modern marketing theory talks about an over-communicated marketplace where people don't trust advertising and explicit attempts to make you buy. "Guerrilla Marketing", "Positioning", and "The Fall of Advertising and Rise of P.R" all talk to this nicely. But this ignores market segmentation. There is a segment of the market you can sell directly too. If you come up with a simple message, blast it to millions of people, some will buy. But you will not get word-of-mouth marketing and a growing position in the market. So, if that is not your market, focus on the writing tips, and tone down the excess and apply within your own marketing framework.

It's been a while since a book has made me feel this conflicted. I'm giving it a three, since it's good writing material. I don't regret buying it, and it did improve my own copywriting- but in the context of my broader marketing experience.

Does he think customers are stupid?
By Miracle Lady
I bought "Hypnotic Writing" and "The Irresistable Offer" at the same time and read them both.

The "Irresistable Offer" is brief, to the point (but still very complete), and states very clearly that one selling point in your ad copy should be that the customer is not stupid, he will square you in 3 seconds or less, he will see if there is any REAL value in what you have to offer, and many more things, in the blink of an eye. (the book gives you REAL MEANS to overcome these stumbling blocks)

Mr. Vitale, on the contrary seems that he wants to entertain his potential customers, and bribe them into thinking that what he sells (and sells, and sells) is extraordinary. He does that with redundant prose, beautiful prose, aesthetically speaking, BUT he shows his true colors from the headers down. Are you really thinking that by using an opening like "amazing breakthrough", like "the truth about..." is going to grab your potential customers' attention, and ABOVE ALL, their trust?
I think that by using Mr. Vitale's wording you are IMMEDIATELY revealing who you are: "I am a seller, I am trying to hypnotize you into buying my product, I don't really care to give you value, what I care is to impress you and make a sale." This is what Mr. Vitale's prose says when you read it.

He gives examples of "normal ad copy" that he translates into "hypnotic ad copy" and he probably expects that the reader will rave about his writing. Well, to me they are both downright awful. They both reveal that the main aim of the copy is not to deliver and communicate REAL VALUE, to offer credibility, to overcome the potential customer's objections by opposing a REAL deal, no, in his writings you "fascinate" the customers, and, in so doing, you sabotage yourself by revealing your real end.

He even adds two paragraphs written in Italian. Now, I am a native Italian, and Italian is my FIRST language. Let me tell you upfront that what Mr. Vitale says it is Italian IS NOT ITALIAN AT ALL. It is a computerized, awful, and totally illogical and incorrect translation of a decent Italian paragraph. He didn't even take the time to ask a translator to translate into REAL ITALIAN those two paragraphs (that he was going to include in a book), so to not offend the linguistics of such a noble language.

I would suggest that you purchase "The Irresistable Offer" by Mark Joyner, THAT is REAL marketing communication, honest, powerful, poignant.
brief but to the point, that is "ad copy" that will win the trust of your prospects immediately and give you a REAL edge over the competition.

A book to sell other books
By F. J. Caceres
On almost every chapter of this book the author just scratches the surface on interesting subjects and will reference other books instead of completing and going deeper into the subject himself. I didn't give a lonely star is because I did find some little bits of information. By the title you would think that it's a book to have; not so. If you can browse it, don't buy it.

Between Equal Rights: A Marxist Theory of International Law (Historical Materialism Books (Haymarket Books)), by China Mieville

This book critically examines existing theories of international law and makes the case for an alternative Marxist approach. China Mieville draws on the pioneering jurisprudence of Evgeny Pashukanis linking law to commodity exchange, and in turn uses international law to make better sense of Pashukanis. Mieville argues that despite its advances, the recent New Stream of radical international legal scholarship, like the mainstream it opposes, fails to make sense of the legal form itself. Drawing on Marxist theory and a critical history of international law from the sixteenth century to the present day, Mieville seeks to address that failure, and argues that international law is fundamentally constituted by the violence of imperialism."

Review
"'China Miiville has produced an elegant and highly welcome critique of modern international law. His sharp but undogmatic use of Marxist analysis strikes effectively at the implausibility and ideological nature of many of the assumptions that support the application of the rule of law between States. His narrative of the consolidation of international law as part of the capitalist States-system provides a much-needed corrective to standard 'idealist' or 'realist' histories in the field and his stress on international law's intrinsic imperialism will challenge the profession for years to come. Respectful of the Marxist classics, Between Equal Rights" is the most sophisticated Left critique of international law available today as well as one of the most significant contributions to the theory and history of international law I have read. It raises the debate about law's role in a globalised world order to a completely new level.'
Martti Koskenniemi, Director of the Erik Castrin Institute of International Law and Human Rights, University of Helsinki."'China Miiville's brilliantly original book is an indispensable guide for anyone concerned with international law. It is the most comprehensive scholarly account available of the central theoretical debates about the foundations of international law. It offers a guide for the lay reader into the central texts in the field and it mounts a formidable challenge to experts to address fundamental theoretical issues about the subject which are too often simply ignored. Miiville's own search for a positive theory of international law takes him into the debates among Soviet legal scholars in the 1920s and in particular to the writings of EvgenyPashukanis whose seminal works on capitalism and law have been available in English since the 1920s but whose significance for a theory of international law is brought out by Miiville for the first time. Miiville's insistence that any adequate account of the foundations of contemporary international law must explore its inner connection with the sociology of capitalism is both a novelty in the field and surely the right starting point for a new, much needed debate about this important subject.'
Peter Gowan, Professor of International Relations, London Metropolitan University.
"'China Miiville's new book is unique. At one level, it provides a rigorous introduction to left wing perspectives on the relationship between law and politics, a topic of enduring interest inside and outside the academy. At another level, however, it tells the story of international law and its intellectual development from a Marxist point of view. It is as the latter that Between Equal Rights" represents a real oasis in the desert for those of us teaching the law of nations, international relations, or diplomatic history. We have waited a long time for a comprehensive and progressive critique of international law. Miiville proves the wait was worth it.'
Anthony Chase, Professor of Law, Nova Southeastern University Law Center

Mieville s own search for a positive theory of international law takes him into the debates among Soviet legal scholars in the 1920s and in particular to the writings of Evgeny Pashukanis whose seminal works on capitalism and law have been available in English since the 1920s but whose significance for a theory of international law is brought out by Mieville for the first time. Mieville s insistence that any adequate account of the foundations of contemporary international law must explore its inner connection with the sociology of capitalism is both a novelty in the field and surely the right starting point for a new, much needed debate about this important subject." Peter Gowan, Professor of International Relations, London Metropolitan University. "China Mieville's new book is unique. At one level, it provides a rigorous introduction to left wing perspectives on the relationship between law and politics, a topic of enduring interest inside and outside the academy. At another level, however, it tells the story of international law and its intellectual development from a Marxist point of view. It is as the latter that Between Equal Rights represents a real oasis in the desert for those of us teaching the law of nations, international relations, or diplomatic history. We have waited a long time for a comprehensive and progressive critique of international law. Mieville proves the wait was worth it." Anthony Chase, Professor of Law, Nova Southeastern University Law Center"

Challenging, comprehensive, and essential
By P. Binh
A challenging read, but essential for understanding international law and its relationship to imperialism, both theoretically and historically. He makes an original and convincing argument that the legal form itself, the law, is directly and fundamentally implied by the existence of commodities. Not only that, but he argues that the ownership of commodities, in the final analysis, is based on the ability to use force to control that commodity, and that violence is fundamental to the legal form, both within and between states.

Armed with this Marxist approach, he is able to explain why international law is law, despite the lack of an armed authority above the world's states to enforce it, which is a big theoretical dilemma that (bourgeois) political science majors and specialists in the field of International Relations (IR) have fruitlessly wrestled with for decades. He also explains why international law persists and why states continue to use it, despite the fact that it is routinely ignored by the dominant powers (the U.S., Israel, Russia, China, etc).

The book closes with the historical development of international law and shows how it is connected with the creation of the world market beginning in the late 1400s and the rise of capitalism as the planet's dominant economic system which completely altered political structures, morals, and ideological norms as it subordinated everything to its logic.

I plan on reading "Law and the Rise of Capitalism" by Madeleine Levy and Michael Tigar soon to help me understand this book.

A sharp and deftly presented leftist critique of international law
By Midwest Book Review
Between Equal Rights: A Marxist Theory Of International Law by China Mieville is a sharp and deftly presented leftist critique of international law from the sixteenth century to the present day. Decrying the complicity of legal norms with the violence inflicted by empires and colonization, Between Equal Rights weighs Marxism against mercantile colonialism, sovereignty, the fine line between imposing imperial will and "police actions", and much more. A philosophical discussion intended for intermediate to advanced students of political, legal, and social theory, Between Equal Rights offers a fierce dissection of the weaknesses, cruelties and blind spots of the status quo, and is highly recommended and relevant reading for students of contemporary International Studies with respect to the issues of international law and the current "war on terrorism" being waged by the United States government and its allies.

A difficult academic book on law and Marxism
By D. J. J. Bendien
Science fiction writer China Mieville's Marxist Phd thesis "Between Equal Rights" is among the more challenging books you're likely to read. His meandering and discursive though erudite analysis refers to and comments on an enormous smorgasbord of authors (there are some 26 pages of bibliography), but regrettably often without clear and systematic exposition of their theoretical positions - thus, to evaluate what is being said often requires good knowledge of the background literature being reviewed. The general reader might therefore quickly feel at a loss, if not put off altogether by abstract Marxist terminology. There are also not a few rhetorical assertions and metaphorical allusions. While one could agree that international law is often a formality flouted in practice or a justifying ideology, I for one am not persuaded by his argument - not just because I think the defended theory of the Russian Marxist Pashukanis (that a legal order is a reflection of commodity exchange) is flawed, but because a profound anthropological-historical perspective on law that one might expect from a Marxist is lacking, and because there is no profound discussion of the role of ethics in society. I therefore often find his claims more question-begging than anything else. The interested reader would be well-advised to read - if he has not already done so - Pashukanis's treatise on "law an Marxism" before attempting to wrestle with this book.

Where would we be without guidebooks? All over the world travellers check out the sights of their chosen destination with their noses glued to a guidebook, and rely on them for every aspect of their visit - ordering meals, understanding the locals or avoiding wandering into the red-light district. Few realise the guidebook has a long and distinguished history, going back to Biblical times and encompassing major cultural and social changes that have witnessed the transformation of travel. Much as the modern "Blue Guide" will tell the visitor what the essential sights of Paris or New York are so, in the fourth century AD, a "Guidebook to the Seven Wonders of the World" was produced. In 1480, an 'official' guidebook to the Holy Land warned 'For the sake of good relations with foreign hosts, a grave and courteous manner must be maintained ...'. This is very similar to the advice given in one of the most recent guidebooks to Iraq: 'Be especially courteous when dealing with officials ...if you upset them, they can be your worst enemies'. In this delightful book Nicholas Parsons takes us on a fascinating journey through centuries of travel writing.

Why the 7 wonders of the world change
By Tucker Cox
This book is a wonderful read. Like the other reviewer says, it is exhaustively researched. Parsons tracks the guidebook's (GB's) development to scholars who accompanied Alexander the Great on his conquests. They wrote about local flora, fauna and customs. He discusses Herodotus' travelogues, still popular today, and other ancients' travel writings. He explores GBs' value to medieval pilgrims to the Holy Land, how guidebooks established Jerusalem as the "new Delphi," contributing to European civilization's transition to Christianity from Roman paganism. Parsons talks about how GBs publicized other journeys of discovery, the most famous example being Marco Polo's Travels, also the most famous travel book of all time .

Parsons writes an interesting and memorable narrative about GBs' role in social movements like the Grand Tour of Europe, Romanticism, mass tourism, canonization of modern sights like da Vinci's Mona Lisa and the enduringly popular destination for modern day pilgrims, Santiago de Campostella, a fascinating tale.

Parsons goes well beyond a review of historical fact. He comments with authority on guidebooks' contribution to modern culture.

Among other things, five stars means well written, coherent, fascinating, memorable and a good reading experience with some scholarly (not pompous, not ponderous) and intellectual dimension. Worth the Detour satisfies on all counts. For an armchair traveler, a committed wanderer or someone who likes a fun history about an interesting topic or all three, I recommend Worth the Detour.

My copy came from my library. I absolutely hate to say it because i got a lot of pleasure from this read. I do not begrudge Mr. Parsons one penny in earnings. Realizing that price sensitivity is a highly individual distinction, when it comes to my Kindle about ten bucks is the max i want to pay.

You'd think it would be comprehensive
By Edie
I bought this book for a very specific purpose: To research the background of several guidebook companies I'd worked for, Frommer's, Fodor's, and Rough Guides. Sure enough, Frommer's is there, though dismissed by the author in a single paragraph of a dense 359 pp. book (exclusive of index): "To Europeans, the guides started by Arthur Frommer fit the cliche of what an American guide will be like." Okay, fair enough. Much of the book is devoted to ancient times. But Johnny-come-lately Rough Guides get two entire pages devoted to them plus references on five others (and this is in addition to even more ink devoted to Lonely Planet, which preceded them). Most surprising is that Eugene Fodor, who wrote his first guidebook in 1936 -- an 1169-page tome called "On the Continent"; it was published in England and included such later-to-become famous contemporaries as Arthur Koestler -- is not mentioned a single time, as far as I could find. Neither Fodor nor the hugely popular guidebook series he spurred is listed in the index; I skimmed the pages where a mention might be, based on chronology, and they are MIA from there too. I am not surprised by the author's condescension towards Americans and their guides -- I experienced it when I worked at Rough Guides in London -- but am baffled by this omission of a major series by the Hungarian-born Eugene Fodor. ~ Edie Jarolim, Ph.D.

A quest, a war, a ring that would be grounds for calling any wedding off, a king without a kingdom, and a furry little "hero" named Frito, ready-or maybe just forced by the wizard Goodgulf-to undertake the one mission that can save Lower Middle Earth from enslavement by the evil Sorhed. Luscious Elf-maidens, a roller-skating dragon, ugly plants that can soul kiss the unwary to death-these are just some of the ingredients in the wildest, wackiest, most irreverent excursion into fantasy realms that anyone has ever dared to undertake. For everyone who has delighted in J. R. R. Tolkien's fantasy masterwork-or anyone who's just looking for a good laugh-Bored of the Rings is the "all-in-one-volume" comic extravaganza that will convince lovers and haters of fantasy that they've finally experienced it all, and that they'll never need to read another fantasy parody again.

Amazon.com Review
Written in the gloaming of their college days, just before they started National Lampoon, Douglas C. Kenney and Henry N. Beard wrote Bored of the Rings. It's dated--references to Nixon, drugs, and consumer products circa 1969 crowd every page--but darn it, Bored of the Rings is still funny nearly 30 years later: "'Goodbye, Dildo,' Frito said, stifling a sob. 'I wish you were coming with us.'

'Ah, yes. But I'm too old for that sort of thing now,' said the old boggie, feigning a state of total quadriplegia. 'Anyway, I have a few small gifts for you,' and he produced a lumpy parcel, which Frito opened somewhat unenthusiastically in view of Dildo's previous going-away present [the ring]. But the package only contained a short, Revereware sword, a bulletproof vest full of moth holes, and several well-thumbed novellas with titles like Elf Lust and Goblin Girl..."

Place yourself in the hands of these professional humorists: you won't be disappointed.

FOREWORD

Though we cannot with complete candor state, as does Professor T., that “the tale grew in the telling,” we can allow that this tale (or rather the necessity of hawking it at a bean a copy) grew in direct proportion to the ominous dwindling of our bank accounts at the Harvard Trust in Cambridge, Massachusetts. This loss of turgor in our already emaciated portfolio was not, in itself, cause for alarm (or “alarum” as Professor T. might aptly put it), but the resultant threats and cuffed ears received at the hands of creditors were. Thinking long on this, we retired to the reading lounge of our club to meditate on this vicissitude.

The following autumn found us still in our leather chairs, plagued with bedsores and appreciably thinner, but still without a puppy biscuit for the lupine pest lolling around the front door. It was at this point that our palsied hands came to rest on a dog-eared nineteenth printing of kindly old Prof. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings. Dollar signs in our guileless eyes, we quickly ascertained that it was still selling like you know whats. Armed to the bicuspids with thesauri and reprints of international libel laws, we locked ourselves in the Lampoon squash court with enough Fritos and Dr Pepper to choke a horse. (Eventually the production of this turkey actually required the choking of a small horse, but that’s another story entirely.)

Spring found us with decayed teeth and several pounds of foolscap covered with inky, illegible scrawls. A quick rereading proved it to be a surprisingly brilliant satire on Tolkien’s linguistic and mythic structures, filled with little takeoffs on his use of Norse tales and wicked phoneme fricatives. A cursory assessment of the manuscript’s sales appeal, however, convinced us that dollarwise the thing would be better employed as tinder for the library fireplace. The next day, handicapped by near-fatal hangovers and the loss of all our bodily hair (but that’s another story), we sat down at two supercharged, fuel-injected, 345-hp Smith-Coronas and knocked off the opus you’re about to read before tiffin. (And we take tiffin pretty durn early in these parts, buckaroo.) The result, as you are about to see for yourself, was a book as readable as Linear A and of about the same literary value as an autographed gatefold of St. Simon Stylites.

“As for any inner meanings or ‘message,’” as Professor T. said in his foreword, there is none herein except that which you may read into it yourself. (Hint: What did P. T. Barnum say was “born every minute”?) Through this book, we hope, the reader may find deeper insights not only into the nature of literary piracy but into his own character as well. (Hint: What is missing from this famous quotation? “A ______ and his ______ soon are ______.” You have three minutes. Ready, set, go!)

Bored of the Rings has been issued in this form as a parody. This is very important. It is an attempt to satirize the other books, not simply to be mistaken for them. Thus, we must strongly remind you that this is not the real thing! So if you’re about to purchase this copy thinking it’s about the Lord of the Rings, then you’d better put it right back onto that big pile of remainders where you found it. Oh, but you’ve already read this far, so that must mean that—that you’ve already bought . . . oh dear . . . oh my . . . (Tote up another one on the register, Jocko. “Ching!”)

Lastly, we hope that those of you who have read Prof. Tolkien’s remarkable trilogy already will not be offended by our little spoof of it. All fooling aside, we consider ourselves honored to be able to make fun of such an impressive, truly masterful work of genius and imagination. After all, that is the most important service a book can render, the rendering of enjoyment, in this case, enjoyment through laughter. And don’t trouble yourself too much if you don’t laugh at what you are about to read, for if you perk up your pink little ears, you may hear the silvery tinkling of merriment in the air, far, far away. . . .

It’s us, buster. Ching!

It’s My Party and I’ll Snub Who I Want To

When Mr. Dildo Bugger of Bug End grudgingly announced his intention of throwing a free feed for all the boggies in his part of the Sty, the reaction in Boggietown was immediate—all through the messy little slum could be heard squeals of “Swell!” and “Hot puppies, grub!” Slavering with anticipation, several recipients of the invitations devoured their little engraved scrolls, temporarily deranged by transports of gluttony. After the initial hysteria, however, the boggies returned to their daily routines and, as is their wont, lapsed back into a coma.

Nevertheless, jabbering rumors spread through the tatty lean-tos of recent shipments of whole, bewildered oxen, great barrels of foamy suds, fireworks, tons of potato greens, and gigantic hogsheads of hogs’ heads. Even huge bales of freshly harvested stingwort, a popular and remarkably powerful emetic, were carted into town. News of the fĂȘte reached even unto the Gallowine, and the outlying residents of the Sty began to drift into town like peripatetic leeches, each intent on an orgy of freeloading that would make a lamprey look like a piker.

No one in the Sty had a more bottomless gullet than that drooling and senile old gossip Haf Gangree. Haf had spent his life as the town’s faithful beadle, and had long since retired on the proceeds of his thriving blackmail racket.

Tonight, Fatlip, as he was called, was holding forth at the Bag Eye, a sleazy dive more than once closed down by Mayor Fastbuck for the dubious behavior of the establishment’s buxom “B-boggies,” who were said to be able to roll a troll before you could say “Rumpelstiltskin.” The usual collection of sodden oafs were there, including Fatlip’s son, Spam Gangree,1 who was presently celebrating his suspended sentence for the performing of an unnatural act with an underage female dragon of the opposite sex.

“The whole thing smells pretty queer to me,” said Fatlip, as he inhaled the acrid fumes of his nose-pipe. “I’m meaning the way Mr. Bugger is throwing this big bash when for years he’s not so much as offered a piece o’ moldy cheese to his neighbors.” The listeners nodded silently, for this was certainly the case. Even before Dildo’s “strange disappearance” he had kept his burrow at Bug End guarded by fierce wolverines, and in no one’s memory had he ever contributed a farthing to the Boggietown Annual Mithril Drive for Homeless Banshees. The fact that no one else ever had either did not excuse Dildo’s famed stinginess. He kept to himself, nurturing only his nephew and a mania for dirty Scrabble.

“And that boy of his, Frito,” added bleary-eyed Nat Clubfoot, “as crazy as a woodpecker, that one is.” This was verified by Old Poop of Backwater, among others. For who hadn’t seen young Frito walking aimlessly through the crooked streets of Boggietown, carrying little clumps of flowers and muttering about “truth and beauty” and blurting out silly nonsense like “Cogito ergo boggum”?

“He’s an odd one, all right,” said Fatlip, “and I wouldn’t be at all surprised if there weren’t something in that talk of his having dwarfish sympathies.” At this point there was an embarrassed silence, particularly from young Spam, who had never believed the unproved charges that the Buggers were “scroll-carrying dwarves.” As Spam pointed out, real dwarves were shorter and smelled much worse than boggies.

“That’s pretty stout talk,” laughed Fatlip, wagging his right foreleg, “about a body what’s only borrowed the name of Bugger!”

“Aye,” chimed Clotty Peristalt. “If that Frito weren’t the seed of a crossbow wedding, then I don’t know lunch from din-din!” The roisterers all laughed aloud as they remembered Frito’s mother, Dildo’s sister, who rashly plighted her troth to someone from the wrong side of the Gallowine (someone known to be a hafling, i.e., part boggie, part opossum). Several of the members took this up and there followed a series of coarse2 and rather simpleminded jests at the expense of the Buggers.

“What’s more,” said Fatlip, “Dildo’s always acting . . . mysterious, if you know what I mean.”

“There are those that say he acts like he’s got something to hide, they say,” came a strange voice from the corner shadows. The voice belonged to a man, a stranger to the boggies of the Bag Eye, a stranger they had understandably overlooked because of his rather ordinary black cape, black chain mail, black mace, black dirk, and perfectly normal red glowing fires where his eyes should have been.

“Them what say that may be right,” agreed Fatlip, winking at his cronies to tell them a punch line was coming. “But them that say such may be wrong, too.” After the general hilarity resulting from the typical Gangree gaff died down, few had noticed that the stranger had disappeared, leaving only a strange, barnyard odor behind him.

“But,” insisted little Spam, “it will be a good party!”

To this they all agreed, for there was nothing a boggie loved more than an opportunity to stuff himself until he was violently ill.

The season was cool, early autumn, heralding the annual change in the boggie dessert from whole watermelons to whole pumpkins. But the younger boggies who...

Brilliant

Seems like people either love or hate this one. Most of the "haters" seem to be folks who consider LoTR to be their religion, or kids too young to get any of the 60's / 70's cultural references.

If you don't remember Moxie or Bromo-Seltzer, and have never heard of Harold Stassen or naugahyde, then you will probably have a hard time understanding most of the humor.

But if you love LoTR but don't worship it, and if you're old enough to get the cultural references, then you'll probably agree that this book is pretty damned funny.

If you loved LOTR and over 55 this is side splitting humor.

This in my opinion is the best thing H-Lampoon ever did. I loved LOTR and this is such a parody of all the great thing characters you laugh yourself silly.

But be warned, if you are much younger someone born after 1960, much of the humor may be lost because things use names common in commercials of the 60's era. But this is pee-pants laugh out loud in public funny. But for those of old enough to "get" the references, it almost nostalgic.

If you're a bit of snoot - stay away. Go be profound somewhere else. If you enjoy the irreverent, have fun.

My original went AWOL.

I have been trying to locate a reasonably priced copy of this book for years - literally! Finally, after 43 years, they have reprinted it!!!

This is the book my in-laws used to quote snippits of! And for Christmas one year we gave my Father-in-law a corduroy thesaurus with dangling participles!

If you are a fan of Tolkien's books, will will laugh yourself silly over this irreverent parody. If you aren't a fan of Tolkien's books, you will still find humor in reading this book, especially if you are a Boomer, simply because of the dated references made into names and locations.

So travel through the Nagio Marsh and through the Evelyn Wood with boggies Frito Bugger, Spam Gangree, Pepsi and Moxie, Stomper the Ranger (Arrowroot of Arrowshirt), Goodgulf the wizard, Legolam, the elf and Gimlet the dwarf on their quest to throw the ring of power into the zazu pits of Fordor and destroy Sorhed's power once and for all!
