About the Author
Michael Howard is a solicitor and legal English lecturer from London. He grew up in Surrey, England and qualified as a solicitor in 2005. After many years of legal practice he decided to travel around Europe and the Middle East lecturing law and teaching English. His travels took him to Poland, Germany, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and finally back to the UK where he was invited to teach legal English to foreign lawyers and law students at Cambridge University. Michael now works in legal publishing and spends his free time writing dictionaries and exercise books to help foreign lawyers improve their legal English.

This Book Helped Improve My Legal English

"You can't make a convincing argument if you can't even speak proper English," that was my brother's very encouraging note to me when I told him I want to study law. English has never been my strongest subject, my grammar often goes haywire, and I've always been ashamed of that. Micheal Howard's Legal Study E-Guide helped me SO MUCH to improve my english and subsequently, my confidence level! Law books are always so complicated with all the big jargons but this book explains legal English vocabulary clear and simple. The 100 test questions gave lots of practical practice that helps me remember all those big words. I often use it as a dictionary or guide of sorts as an accompaniment to my regular law books. I chose this book because I thought it was important that the author, Micheal Howard was both an experienced lawyer and English teacher. He really did combined all his experiences to create something immensely useful and practical for law students!

A short, but very nice chronicle of what's wrong with our banking system and an important piece for anyone who still believes the narrative sold to people during and after the 2008/2009 housing crash.

Startling

If you want to read a book on how the Fed, the government, and Wall Street are bedfellows in clear, concise, and understandable terms, then read this short book. It's eye opening, written by a person who was there, has integrity and credentials, and can explain things so anybody can understand. That's why the stock market keeps going up and up, but, the United States will have to pay the piper someday. Excellent reading for those who want to know.

A Highly Engrossing and Accessible Account of the Decay of our Economic and Political System

If you want to understand how the biggest theft in world history took place, I highly recommend this book. I've read other accounts of the Financial Collapse of 2008 that left me scratching my head, but Ms. Tavakoli has a fluid and accessible writing style that allows the reader to understand what happened, why it happened and how it is likely to happen again. This book is enraging since it clearly demonstrates how a bunch of pompous sociopaths managed to privatize rewards and socialize risk in the banking sector, while producing nothing of value to the public at large. The executives at Goldman Sachs, J.P. Morgan Chase and the other Too Big To Fail institutions should be rotting in prison for their crimes, but instead are protected by a political and regulatory system that is bought and paid for by their political contributions. It's a shame that the American Taxpayers are too stupid to force these criminals to be subject to justice for their crimes.

About the Author
Geoffrey Parker is a professor of engineering at Dartmouth College and a visiting scholar and research fellow at the MIT Initiative for the Digital Economy. Before joining academia, he held positions in engineering and finance at General Electric. He has made significant contributions to the economics of network effects as co-developer of the theory of two-sided networks. Parker's work has been supported by the Department of Energy, the National Science Foundation, and numerous corporations. Parker advises senior leaders in government and business and is a frequent speaker at conferences and industry events. He received his BS from Princeton and his MS and PhD from MIT.

Marshall W. Van Alstyne is a professor at Boston University and a visiting scholar and research fellow at the MIT Initiative on the Digital Economy. Van Alstyne is a world expert on information economics and has made fundamental contributions to IT productivity and to theories of network effects. His coauthored work on two-sided networks is taught in business schools worldwide. In addition, he holds patents in information privacy protection and on spam prevention methods. Van Alstyne has been honored with six best paper awards and National Science Foundation IOC, SGER, iCORPS, SBIR and Career Awards. He is an adviser to leading executives, a frequent keynote speaker, a former entrepreneur, and a consultant to startups and to Global 100 companies. He received his BA from Yale and his MS and PhD from MIT.

Sangeet Paul Choudary is a C-level advisor to executives globally on platform business models. He is an Entrepeneur-in-Residence at the INSEAD Business School and a Fellow at the Centre for Global Enterprise. He has been ranked among the top 30 emerging business thinkers globally by Thinkers 50. Sangeet writes the popular blog Platformed (platformed.info), and his work has been featured on leading journals and media, including the Harvard Business Review, MIT Technology Review, Sloan Management Review, the Wall Street Journal and The Economist. ' This book is the single best introduction I have read to Platform Businesses

Every so often I lead workshops on pricing strategy. For the past several years I have been telling people that if you are in a conventional business (what Parker, Van Alstyne and Choudary call a 'pipeline business') and you are competing against a platform business you have already lost. Pipeline businesses do not have winning strategies against multisided markets, or as this book calls them 'platform businesses.' This book is the single best introduction I have read to Platform Businesses. If you use (and if you are reading this you do use a Platform Business, Amazon), are working on or may compete against a Platform Business you need to read this book. I have been recommending it to my own team at TeamFit.co to my investees and to companies that come to me for pricing advice.

Platform Revolution has many strong points.It explains the feedback loops and network effects (positive and negative) that drive platform business dynamics, the chapter on monetization is excellent and the chapter on governance is a must read (I think I will send a copy to Vancouver's mayor). The book even has a short section on data ownership, which is likely to emerge as a major social issue over the next decade (ask yourself, why does the company I work for own my employee records, why don't I own them too!).

Platform Revolution is not perfect of course. My main complaint is the lack of useful diagrams. The book is sketch poor and I found that I had to keep a notebook and pencil beside me as I read to make sure I was following all of the interactions of forces and to give me some mnemonics to remember what I was reading. This is good in that it helped me to build up my own mental models, but I would prefer to have shared sketches that I could use in business planning with other people. I also found the characterization of the two sides of a market as 'producers' and 'consumers' limiting. This is not a useful model to describe many two-sided market interactions, as the authors themselves noticed when they talked about dating sites (dating sites are a good thing to study to learn a lot about very dynamic two-sided markets). I also found the discussion of Porter's Five Forces to be simplistic and dismissive. This seems to be an MIT thing as other people associated with MIT have the same blinkers. A more useful approach would be to look at how each aspect of the five forces gets drawn into platform markets.

There are some other good books to read on this theme. I would also recommend Platform Ecosystems by Amrit Tiwana, Matchmakers by David Evans and Modern Monopolies by Moazed and Johnson. But Platform Revolution is an excellent place to start.

Read this book to keep up

Disclaimers: I do not know the authors; I did buy the book from Amazon; I have no financial stake in the book; I am not a robot reviewer. My summary is that this book is essential reading for anyone who is part of any of the digital revolutions going on today. This includes those in business and those in information technology. You need to include the "platform mentality" in your business planning. I didn't give the book five stars for three reasons. One, a few references in the text seemed really out of date. Apparently no one caught those in the editing process. Second, in truth, the platform revolution started quite a while ago. Companies like CH Robinson have been successfully using it in the logistics business years before Facebook. Finally, all is not roses in platforms. Who is going to guarantee the quality of Uber cars and drivers, for example? Online reviews (like this one) are not 100% reliable and only a few bad apples can ruin the barrel. But it is an exciting time and an exciting book.

Timely broad survey of platforms, mechanisms, and issues

This a scholarly but very readable survey of platforms and their foundations, with broad scope and modest depth. As a technologist and entrepreneur I found this a very good way to quickly grasp the breadth of platforms and the transformations they cause. If you want a good Platforms 101, you won't be disappointed. This book orients you. If you want implementation details, you'll need to look elsewhere. There are many platform foundations to choose from.

A delightful and intriguing book

I very rarely give five stars, but I'm doing it here. If you are interested in aviation, history or travel, you will enjoy this book! It is written with a light touch and enquiring mind, full of anecdote and hard-to-find historical detail. Although I read this book in paperback (my husband most fortunately picked it up second-hand for a dollar), I recommend buying it in ebook, as that makes it much easier to follow up the intriguing references to planes, people and places. I spent half my time swapping between the paperback and my iPad, chasing references. (The Kindle app makes it very easy to look things up, so I would have bought the ebook copy as well, if it had not been so overpriced. Seriously, publishers, an ebook copy of a title published in 1986 should not cost anything like this much.)

Websites online filled in historical detail, but this book made the events and people come alive. It's refreshing to read such natural, adept writing. I haven't enjoyed someone's writing this much in ages. :)

A Legendary Route of Air Travel Revisited

This book has been recommended to me by a pilot friend many years ago, and I must confess that Frater's style of writing, his love for detail in describing aircraft operations as well as his ability to tell a story while at the same time reflecting upon anecdotes from the old days immediately appealed to my taste. Following a very recent (and short) business trip that has taken me during six days from Frankfurt to Singapore, Melbourne, Canberra, Brisbane, and from there back via Singapore to Frankfurt, mostly on the upper deck of wide bodies, I re-discovered this book on one of my shelves and started reading it again, contemplating on the derring-do of air travel in the Imperial Airways days and the ease with which we are covering such distances today.
I can strongly recommend this book to readers that want to be taken on a journey through times when such an undertaking as flying from London to Australia was measured in weeks rather than hours. At the same time Frater's account of his attempt to follow the footsteps of the Imperial Airways route in modern times is highly entertaining. And, at least I again am full of admiration for the aviation pioneers that have paved the way for today's well-oiled machinery of commercial aviation.

Brilliant. The man knows how to put history and story together in one solid piece of work. The tales of those early days leave one quite envious of people who could afford it managed to travel. However, I suppose if you can afford it these days being up the front end of an A380 is probably no difference in service.....you just don't get to stay and see all the exciting places he talks about.

This is a great book, you can learn new trick & looks. I am disappointed because I already had an About Face book by Scott Barnes and it has a different Jennifer Lopez cover on it so I thought it was a different book & that is why I purchased it, well no it is the same exact book with just a different cover on it so I wasted my money! :( But it is still an awesome book for any makeup artist or anyone wanting to try new looks.

Keret, an Israeli writer who also writes children's books and collaborates with illustrators on graphic stories and novels, specializes in brainteasing short short stories reminiscent of the "Shouts and Murmurs" section of the New Yorker—30 are packed in this thin volume. A typical Keret situation is enacted in "Your Man": the narrator finds that his girlfriends inexplicably break up with him in the back of taxicabs while the radio always announces a caller from a certain address. He goes to the address, finds photos of his exes tacked to the wall and erupts in violence, with repercussions that give new meaning to masochism. Dogs play a role in Keret's stories similar to the sly role they assume in Thurber cartoons, hovering between the fantastic and the everyday, and sex is an obsession ("Actually, I've Had Some Phenomenal Hardons Lately" is one story's title.) In "Fatso," a man's girlfriend confides a secret: she turns into a rotund male at night. Like French surrealist Marcel Aymé, Keret keeps his stories one dimensional, but it's a dimension he has mastered, one that peels away the borderlines of normalcy. (Apr.)

Once you know that Keret's work has been featured on NPR's This American Life and Selected Shorts, it becomes hard to think of these 30 pieces as short stories. The adenoidal 35--going-on-13 tones of the former program's host grate in the mind like the voices of Woody Allen, Shelley Berman, and other ur-stand-ups, and the veil is parted. These aren't stories, they're routines! They're mostly told in the third person by the same kind of guys (once, gal) as the protagonists: schlemiels, though the singles among them are also slackers.^B They're modern young Israelis fixated on sex, unable to make lasting connections, frustrated to quiet madness, and feckless as . . . a stand-up's persona. Most of their stories are could-be realistic, a few are ultimately sentimental, and the best are arguably the fantasies, such as the volume opener, whose protagonist has a girlfriend ("the sex is dynamite") who becomes a fat, hairy, party-animal guy at night, and is still as much fun to be with. Quirky Humor

The stories are very funny, but they start to get a little overwhelming when I read several of them in a row; the quirkiness can be a bit much all at once.

When he's good, he's good . . .

There are many fantastic short stories in this collection, _The Nimrod Flipout_, by Israeli author Etgar Keret. There are also many that are reminiscent of first drafts from a night-school creative writing class. When he's good, Keret is a fantastic new talent, full of humor and existential angst, but when he's not - he's trite, cliche, and boring - one more young guy writing about getting stoned and laid.

The titular story "The Nimrod Flipout", is one of the best in the entire collection. Three young men are possessed, in turn, by the spirit of their friend, Nimrod, who killed himself after his girlfriend broke up with him. [Variety is also not Keret's strong suit. There are at least two other stories where someone kills themselves because they've been dumped.] After the narrator, the last to succumb to the spirit of his deceased friend, the possession repeats itself starting over again with Miron, the first to be possessed. It's a touching story about the frivolity of youth, and deeply tragic, as well; its also one of the funniest stories in the collection.

"Fatso", the opening story, I also loved. It is about a guy whose girlfriend turns into a fat, drunk, soccer-loving man after the sun goes down, and how, after spending many nights going out and watching soccer at the bar with this character, he begins to love his girlfriend, too.

This collection has its shining moments, and is highly recommended to fans of short fiction. However, don't be surprised if some of the stories dissapoint.

Some of these stories are brilliant, first round knockouts. Others are shtick-yawns. The best are like the wondrous short-short stories of Spencer Holst. The worst are whines from the slacker you'd never listen to for five minutes if you bumped into them at a bar. Buy the book for the wonderful, but expect a very mixed bag.
