About the Author
Abraham H. Maslow taught at Brooklyn College and the Western Behavioral Sciences Institute, and was Chairman of the Department of Psychology at Brandeis University. From 1967 to 1968 he was Preseident of the American Psychological Association. Many great ideas if you can put yourself in Maslow's world

I purchased this book to explore more insights into Maslow's thinking. Before reading I had only known the basic concepts of Maslow's philosophy e.g. Hierarchy of needs, foundations of humanism. The Farthest Reaches of Human Nature pushed my understanding of Maslow's definition of a self-actualization and offered great insights into values, creativity, and education. It's a wonderful read for anyone who is interested in the topics I mentioned above, especially creativity; he offers a very descriptive and well-defined section in his book. He describes the actual process of creativity what it does to the persons' cognition.
However, he does have some chapters that require your own research in order to follow his writing. Maslow has a way of almost talking to himself in his writing, and he says some things that aren't very easy to pick up on. But don't let that hinder you. There are many enlightening ideas that would give any reader who is interested in psychological well being that little 'head buzz.'

The Farther Reaches of Human Nature

Abraham Maslow's understanding of human values, such as Truth, Goodness, Beauty and Justice rises above all writers I have read. This book is extremely brave and forthright, as it contains Maslow's most insightful notes and they were published by his wife, Bertha, after his death! This is a master work and challenging to the psychological and philosophical and scientific professions. Maslow shows how the human values of being are also FACTS! His work can be scientifically replicated and verified according to the most rigorous scientific methods of the 19th century. Maslow said that education without values is highly destructive and dangerous. So, what are they teaching at Harvard that caused the global financial meltdown which has thrown millions of people out of work? Maslow's work is a classic--a must read--by anyone who cares, loves and wants to advance the forward days of humankind.

A profound, unfinished book

This book was unfortunately not finished by Maslow. The first part of the book is a philosophically profound book about human nature, that answered many ontological and epistemological questions for me.
The first part of the book was extremely well written, and it contained truly revolutionary ideas. Most of us think of Maslow's contribution as "the pyramid of the hierarchy of needs", since that is probably what is usually taught about him. But this book is much more than that, and it delves insightfully into the realization of the full human potential, including knowing, perceiving, being, needs, metaneeds, aesthetics, etc.
Because the book is an unedited, unfinished draft of a book, the second part reads like it. It is difficult to enjoy the last half of the book because it reads as the personal notes of a writer planning his essay. Despite its "annotated outline" format, one can still get glimpses of sheer genius in those notes, and it truly is a shame and a loss for our intellectual inheritance that the book wasn't finished. Of course, as unedited notes often do, these contain material that is deleterious to the overall quality of Maslows well-thought ideas. The editors (or perhaps un-editors) failed in this respect.
It is remarkable how timeless, elegant, and structured the first finished part of the book is, in contrast with some of the "culturally dated" second part of the book.
None-the-less, this book is well worth the time to read it. It is a brilliant piece of work, and Maslow is truly one of the great psychologist-philosophers of the 20th century.

I was perched on a barstool in a dark, noisy, overpriced ­restaurant in Princeton, New Jersey. I was wearing a red dress that was too tight, too short, and cut way too low. And I was wearing an earbud that connected me to a guy named Ricardo Carlos Manoso, aka Ranger.

My name is Stephanie Plum. I usually work as a bond enforcement agent for my cousin Vinnie, but tonight I was moonlighting as a lookout for Ranger. Ranger was stalking Emilio Gardi, a man many considered to be untouchable. Gardi had friends in high places, an army of thugs guarding his body, and money to burn, and his enemies tended to disappear without a trace. He was currently facing a racketeering charge in Miami, but he’d decided to keep his dinner date in Jersey rather than attend his court hearing in Dade County. This meant that the idiot who’d been dumb enough to post a bond for Gardi was out big money unless Gardi was dragged back to jail. The idiot happened to be Ranger’s cousin.

Ranger owns Rangeman, a small high-­tech, high-­end ­security firm. Ordinarily Ranger doesn’t do bond enforcement, but tonight he was making an exception. He was standing off to the side at the entrance to the dining room, and he was watching Gardi.

Gardi was wearing a tan sports jacket over a shirt with red and yellow flowers printed on it—­the South Beach–­meets–­JCPenney look. He was in his fifties. He was balding. He was built like a fireplug. He was drinking red wine and eating rack of lamb, having a good time, entertaining three other men who were laughing too hard at his jokes.

Ranger was in his usual black—­a perfectly tailored black suit, and a black dress shirt open at the neck. The Glock at the small of his back was also black. Ranger’s body is perfect. His hair is very dark brown. Cut short. His eyes are dark brown and intense. His skin is the color of hot chocolate, the lucky result of his Latino ancestry. His earbud matched his skin tone and was barely detectable.

Standing beside Ranger was a guy named Tank. Tank is big and solid and lethal. He’d been with Ranger’s unit in Special Forces, and now he’s second in command at Rangeman and watches Ranger’s back.

I didn’t see any of Gardi’s henchmen. They’d waited for him to take his table and then left the room.

“The room is clean,” I said to Ranger via the earbud.

Ranger moved forward, his gaze never wavering from his quarry. Eye of the tiger. I’ve seen him focus like this on other takedowns, and it always raises the hair on my arms and at the nape of my neck.

Tank was steps behind him, surveying the rest of the room. Ranger unbuttoned his jacket to get better access to his gun and handcuffs. He stopped behind Gardi, put his hand on Gardi’s shoulder, and said something to him, close to his ear.

Gardi shrugged Ranger away, said something I couldn’t hear, and everyone at the table laughed.

Ranger didn’t laugh, and even at a distance I knew things were about to get ugly. Ranger made another civil attempt, Gardi got angry and brushed him off, and in one swift move Ranger snatched Gardi out of his chair like a wolverine rooting out a groundhog.

In a heartbeat Gardi’s head was smashed onto the table, everyone grabbed their drinks, and Ranger cuffed Gardi behind his back and handed him over to Tank. Ranger told the table he was sorry for the intrusion and followed Tank and Gardi out of the room. The whole episode had taken maybe a minute.

A Rangeman vehicle idled in front of the restaurant, ready to take Tank and Gardi back to Rangeman headquarters in center city Trenton. In the morning Gardi would be escorted onto a plane and extradited to Miami.

My job done, I turned back to my black sambuca. Okay, I know they put food coloring in the sambuca to make it black. Don’t care. It’s sexy. And I swear the black tastes better. I guess I could also say that about Ranger. Not that he’s my boyfriend or anything, but we have had a moment.

I downed the sambuca, paid my tab, and went outside to meet up with Ranger. The Rangeman SUV was pulling away, and Ranger was waiting for me beside his black Porsche 911 Turbo.

“Babe,” he said.

“Babe” covers a lot of ground for Ranger. It can be a simple greeting, or a warning that a tarantula is sitting on my shoulder. Tonight it came on the heels of a full body scan, and I was pretty sure it suggested he liked my dress.

Ranger slipped an arm around me, leaned close, and kissed me. The kiss was a further indicator that he liked the dress. In fact, the kiss suggested that while he liked the dress a lot, he wouldn’t mind getting me out of the dress as soon as possible. And I was thinking that was a great idea. Fortunately we were in Princeton, and my apartment was at least a half hour away if the traffic was moving. I was going to need that time to talk myself out of sleeping with Ranger.

Ranger keeps me safe from everyone but himself. He’s the panther stalking the gazelle, keeping all other predators away. He enjoys the hunt. And I enjoy being the gazelle, although truth is I’m more prairie chicken than gazelle.

Ranger’s reflexes are quicker, his brain engages faster, his instincts are far superior than the average man’s. My skin heats under his touch, and his kiss sets delicious things in motion in my body. I know from past experience he’s magic in bed. I also know he has dark secrets that take precedence over personal relationships. And I know it’s in my best interests to keep him at arm’s length.

Plus, I sort of have a boyfriend.

Ranger pulled out of the restaurant lot, stopped for a light, and his hand went to my knee and traveled north.

“Um,” I said.

He cut his eyes to me. “Is there a problem?”

“Your hand is moving up my leg.”

“And?”

“We’ve talked about this.”

“Not lately,” Ranger said.

“Has anything changed?”

“No.”

“Well, then.”

“Is that a definite ‘Well, then’?”

“Afraid it is.”

“Too bad,” Ranger said.

Thirty minutes later, Ranger parked behind my apartment building and walked me to my door.

“Call me if you get lonely,” he said.

“I have you on speed dial,” I told him.

A barely perceptible smile twitched at the corners of his mouth, he gave me a light kiss, and he left.

Truth is, I would have liked to invite him in, but that wouldn’t have been the smart thing to do. Not that I always do the smart thing, but tonight I’d managed to keep from grabbing him and ripping his clothes off. Two points for Plum.

I let myself into my apartment and went to the kitchen to say hello to my hamster, Rex. Rex lives in an aquarium on my kitchen counter and sleeps in a soup can. He was running on his wheel when I looked in on him.

“Hey,” I said. “How’s it going?”

Rex blinked his round black eyes at me and twitched his whiskers. That’s about as complicated as our conversations ever get. I dropped a peanut into his cage and he jumped off his wheel, shoved the peanut into his cheek, and scurried into his soup can with it.

My cousin Vinnie’s bail bonds office is on Hamilton Avenue. It’s a one-­story storefront building with some parking spots by the back door. Vinnie has an inner office where he hides from people he’s stiffed, pissed off, infected with herpes, or previously incarcerated. Vinnie looks like a weasel in a pimp suit. His wife, Lucille, is a saint. His father-­in-­law, Harry the Hammer, owns the agency and didn’t get his nickname because he was a carpenter.

Connie Rosolli, the office manager and guard dog, was at her desk when I walked in.

“How’d it go last night?” she asked.

“It was good. Ranger walked up to Gardi, yanked him out of his chair, and cuffed him. Very smooth.”

“And?”

“That was it.”

“No naked Ranger in your bed?”

“Nope.”

“Disappointing,” Connie said.

Tell me about it. “Anything new come in for me?”

“I have a failure-­to-­appear. High money bond. Jimmy Poletti.”

“He owns all those car dealerships, right? He shoots his own commercials. ‘Make a deal with Jimmy!’ ”

Please don't shoot the critic

Janet Evanovich has been writing best-selling books for so many years I forget when I started reading them. The antics of Stephanie and her crew have made me laugh so hard I had tears running down my legs. The sexual tension between the characters has always had me coming back for more, and, more. Ms. Evanovich was a master of the craft and we all profited from it. She's done now. The legend of Stephanie Plum is over. I don't know how it happened. I don't know when it all started to go wrong. But alas, the ride is over. Maybe it started when the author started to write other series with other authors. Maybe she just had no more left for Stephanie to do. But since about book 11, I think we all started getting tired of it. How many more times is someone going to say "babe"? Are we expected to read a book where someone usually dies, the dog eats something and pukes, grandma does something kooky, and the heroine waffles back and forth between two men. We all give thanks for the years of enjoyment but we are officially done. For the last ten books (translate ten years and about $300.00, not to mention the shelf space we have lost) you can take off the dust jackets, mix them around and put them in any order you want. It makes no difference, THE'RE ALL THE SAME BOOK!!!! I gave it ten good years and except for the fact that the books are getting thinner, they haven't changed a bit. I actually SKIMMED through this book. Can you believe it? SKIMMED!!! I'm sorry Janet, I have loved your books since I was a teenager, but I can't read one more repetitious word. I WILL miss you. But I really need the shelf space.

The Only Positive Thing Left

Anymore, I look forward to reading the Stephanie Plum Amazon book reviews much more than I actually enjoy the books.

Let me summarize
Lula is fat, beautiful and funny
Grandma Mazur is whacky
Vinnie is creepy
Connie is competent
Rex is …. well my goodness he's STILL ALIVE and still pretty much a work free pet
Joe is hardworking, decent, needs a hair cut, and likes sex
Ranger is hardworking, dark, mysterious, wealthy and just an almost irresistible temptation

Stephanie is cute, has curly hair that she wears in a ponytail, utterly incompetent and lucky as all heck

Well, and Randy Briggs is back. Still short. Still obnoxious.

And this year's weird animal is a pack of red-eyed killer chihuahuas. Do you people know how hard it is to correctly spell chihuahua? I think getting that right numerous times was probably the biggest effort that was put into writing this book.

Count to 12 and read THOSE numbered early Stephanie Plum books instead! This is a rehash and lacks accurate details.

I downloaded and read this book in about 3 hours on my Kindle Fire HD.
It was SO predictable. Nothing new was added, nothing old disappeared.

If I had to do it over again, I would never have touched one of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum books. Never. Not in a million years. But, like Steph and donuts, I'm kinda hooked.
I figure the series has to come to some conclusion eventually....

This book, however, was such a formulation of all the last few years' of Plum number series books that it was impossible to find anything much to smile about, be interested in, or even be grossed out about even though Janet amped up the gross factor quite a lot to make up for the lack of sex. This was a first I think. Usually there's not much grossness or sex.
Just a girl who is always described by her hair, her mascara, her lip gloss and her lack of markmanship.

This has to end, Janet. Please. Use a nice even number like " 22" and put Steph. with one of the two men, make it final, and maybe shuffle the formula writing off to someone else- someone who will then write gooey romance novels about Stephanie and either Joe or Ranger.
I'd actually read more if Ranger was the leading man.

This action adventure is stale and trite and the gore in this novel was " shock jock". I believe an adolescent is writing under Evanovich's famed name now. Really.

This book is intended for today's equipment technician, maintenance mechanic, electrician, or manufacturing technician who is responsible (in conjunction with others) for all the know-how beyond the initial design of a machine. This publication supports the technical staff's daily activities by providing an introduction to principles, concepts, devices, and applications related to operating, installing, troubleshooting, and servicing electromechanical systems.

The book works equally well as a self-paced study guide for employed technicians and maintenance personnel who are working independently to upgrade themselves or as a text for a course in electromechanics. The graded chapters progress from the concepts and principles of mechanics, electricity, and magnetics to the applications for electromechanical machine elements, finishing with a chapter introducing the concepts of automatic control systems.

This text has numerous figures and examples designed to help both teacher and learner. Problem-solving techniques, which are emphasized throughout the text, are presented in a conversational tone. Coupled with problem solving is the helpful technique of dimensional analysis, which is used to determine units for computed quantities. Electromechanics: Principles, Concepts, and Devices, Second Edition, assumes no previous mechanical training or understanding of mechanical units of measurement since it begins with a review of number notation, systems of measurement, and conversion between and within measuring systems. It continues to the principles of linear motion (Newton's laws, time, distance, speed, acceleration, etc.) and then progresses through a series of simple machines and their principles, ending with several applications dealing with lubrication and bearings. Once this series of topics is completed, the study of mechanics continues with the concepts and principles of rotary motion and its application to the transmission of power. Mechanical applications include the study of various radial and axial power-transmission machine elements (such as couplings, gearing, and belt and chain drives), oscillatory-motion mechanisms, and intermittent-motion mechanisms. The mechanical section concludes with the study of motion characteristics—constant velocity, constant acceleration, and jerk.

The remainder of the book deals with principles of electrical and magnetic circuits and devices, power, work (energy), applications of transformers, overcurrent devices, relays, contactors, starters, and solenoids. The text concludes with the study of sequential process control, ladder diagrams, and motors, both ac and do as well as adjustable frequency ac drives, stepper motors, and an introduction to automatic control systems.

This text uses both the British Engineering System, or BES (English system), and the International System of Units, or SI (metric system), in the study of mechanics (distance, speed, acceleration, work, and power). Both systems are still studied, even today, because many parts suppliers list replacement parts, tools, and equipment in English units, whereas new equipment and products are increasingly specified in metric units. As in the past, technicians who work with mechanical equipment as well as electrical and electronic equipment must be educated in both the SI and BES systems.

About the Author

Yea-Fen Chen is coordinator of the Chinese language program at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and has been teaching Chinese for over twenty years. She coauthored three other Chinese language textbooks: Integrated Chinese Level 1, Crossing Paths: Living and Learning in China, and Shifting Tides: Culture in Contemporary China.

Meng Yeh is a senior lecturer at Rice University and coauthor of Communicating in Chinese: Student Lab Workbook. She has provided consultation for many Chinese language programs at K-12 schools and colleges and has received the Sarofim Teaching Award. She founded the regional chapter of the Chinese Language Teachers Association in Texas.

Frances Yufen Lee Mehta is a senior lecturer at Cornell University and has taught Chinese for over twenty years. She is the author of Colloquial Chinese Reader and is the recipient of several awards, including the Clark Outstanding Teaching Award. She specializes in pedagogy, teacher training, and material development.

Mei-Ju Hwang is the lead Chinese teacher for the Springfield Chinese Program in Massachusetts. She has taught Chinese for over twenty years and leads the district Chinese curriculum development and assessment. She has received several awards in teaching excellence and is the recipient of the Distinguished Community Partner Award from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. She is also the coauthor of Flying with Chinese and a codeveloper for LangNet, directed by the National Foreign Language Center at the University of Maryland.

Yuanchao Meng teaches Chinese at Oak Hill Middle School in Newton, Massachusetts, and was a visiting senior instructor at Bridgewater State College for twenty years. She is the author of Setting the Stage for Chinese Level 1: Plays and Performances for Grades K-6 and Setting the Stage for Chinese Level 2: Plays and Performances for Grades 7-12.

Natasha Piercehas been an ESL and Chinese teacher for twenty years and currently teaches Chinese at Madison Memorial High School in Madison, Wisconsin. She has also worked as a teacher trainer. Amanda Wood is a self-taught artist currently residing in Cincinnati, Ohio. The paradigm of engineering is undergoing a major evolution throughout the world. The use of computers and the Internet has changed the way that we engineer and manufacture products. Among the recent trends in manufacturing are trends in which products are subject to a shorter product life, frequent design changes, small lot sizes, and small in-process inventory restrictions ("lean manufacturing"). The result of these trends is that today more than 90% of our products are manufactured in lots of less than 50 parts. These low lot quantities have eliminated many applications of dedicated production lines that were so effective in producing the inexpensive goods of the 1950 and 1960s.

The first step the nation employed to remain competitive with our international counterparts was the application of computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) to design and manufacture sophisticated products. Today, we routinely employ CAD to design products and flexible or programmable manufacturing systems to produce low- to medium-volume batch quantities. The Internet provides us with the connection to share design, marketing, and manufacturing information. We now look toward the advent of distributed design and manufacturing using agile networking as a means to produce products for the twenty-first century.

Employing numerical control (NC) and robotics in industry offers one potential solution to many manufacturing flexibility problems. This implementation, however, brings with it a variety of other problems. Robots and NC machines are designed to be flexible, self-contained, and capable of operating in both "stand-alone" and "integrated" manufacturing environs. Integrating this hardware into manageable systems has become a major focus of machine-tool makers and industry. Individual NC machines have also been made more versatile, more precise, more rigid and durable, and faster. More complex parts can be machined with higher accuracy and in less time. Timecompressed manufacturing technologies such as NC and rapid prototyping are being used more routinely to shorten product development cycles and to produce one-of-a-kind products. The benefit of all these new technologies cannot be achieved without the "communication networks" or an understanding of how these activities fit together. Today, it is not unusual for a design made thousands of miles away to be transferred to and realized in a remote site. Part programs and control instructions are downloaded from offices to machine controllers. Shop-floor operations can also be monitored either on-site or from afar. Manufacturing equipment has become part of the supply chain; capacity and availability are parameters used in planning and control of the entire chain. Further integration of the manufacturing component with design and business systems is also a key to our manufacturing success. These communication and control issues, coupled with a variety of sensing issues, are critical to the success of flexible automation in the United States.

This book focuses on the science, mathematics, and engineering of these new engineering methods. It is dedicated to making sure that the United States will remain the most efficient manufacturing nation in the world. The purpose of the book is to provide a comprehensive view of manufacturing, with a focus on design, automation, flexible automation, and the use of computers in manufacturing (CIM). Unlike other CIM books, this one attempts to provide a strong analytical science base and background in computer-aided manufacturing systems. The book is an excellent professional reference and also is an excellent text for CAM instruction.

The book is written for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses. Each chapter covers general background, fundamental principles, and applications. Unlike most other manufacturing books on the market, it includes both descriptive information and analytical models. Whenever possible, MATLAB is used in examples. We do not assume that readers have a significant background beyond basic undergraduate engineering courses. However, the book does cover a very wide range of technologies and methodologies. Readers will gain in-depth and practical knowledge in CAM technologies.

Getting dated, lots of errors

I've used this text for a reference and for teaching several courses. The main problem is that it is getting outdated--ANY text that has "computer" in the title gets outdated after a few years. Of course, there are fewer and fewer texts that address CAD/CAM in the marketplace as well, because they can't keep up with the technology. ON the other hand, manufacturing systems (particularly CNC) don't change quickly, so much of the legacy systems out there can be addressed with the text. The other issue is the number of figure and solution errors--there are quite a few. If you assign problems from the text, be prepared to check every single problem. I've alerted the publisher to this problem several times and have not seen any update or even an errata sheet.

In summary: Pretty good for an encompassing CAD/CAM text, a bit dated (especially the CAD section), and check for errors.
