About the Author
Patrick H. O’Neil is Professor of Politics and Government at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington. He received his Ph.D. in Political Science from Indiana University. Professor O’Neil’s teaching and research interests are in the areas of authoritarianism and democratization. His past research focused on Eastern Europe, and his current research deals with the Middle East, particularly Iran. His publications include Revolution from Within: The Hungarian Socialist Worker’s Party “Reform Circles” and the Collapse of Communism and Communicating Democracy: The Media and Political Transitions (editor).

Karl Fields is Professor of Politics and Government and Director of Asian Studies at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington. He has Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of California, Berkeley. Professor Fields’ teaching and research interests include various topics of East Asian political economy, including government-business relations, economic reform and regional integration. His publications include Enterprise and the State in Korea and Taiwan (1995).

Don Share is Professor of Politics and Government at the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma Washington. He received his Ph.D. in Political Science from Stanford University. He teaches comparative politics and Latin American Politics and has published widely on democratization and Spanish politics. His books include The Making of Spanish Democracy and Dilemmas of Social Democracy.

Description: This fourth edition of an introduction to epidemiology's principles and applications follows the same structure as the 2004 edition while presenting new and updated information and using color graphs and pictures to make epidemiologic concepts easier to understand. 

Purpose: Many professionals apply methods and concepts derived from epidemiology. Moreover, the lay public needs to be educated in its basic principles, particularly since epidemiologic research involves human subjects and their participation is vital for valid results and inferences. Therefore, a book like this is extremely important to the field.

Audience: It addresses a large audience interested in epidemiology as a basic science for disease prevention and an important part of public health policy development and evaluation. The author targets a broad group of professionals in different disciplines, as well as the public at large. It is useful not only for a large variety of students (from health sciences to legal disciplines), but also for public health and medical practitioners who are interested in keeping up-to-date with epidemiologic research applicable to their specialty. The author has vast experience, not only in medical and epidemiologic research, but also in teaching.

Excellent book. It contains enough information to give someone like me, a novice, an overview of what epidemiology is and its important concepts. However, it's not overwhelming. The pictures go well with the text, and the occasional cartoon -and other funny bits- make the book even better! Highly recommended!

"Cezanne and the Apple Boy" is a new title in Laurence Anholt's children's series about famous artists. Paul, the artist's son, is the apple boy, who goes to visit his father where he paints on a mountainside. Although people scoff at the paintings of Paul Cezanne, his son believes in him. He tells an art critic named Vollard to be careful with his father's paintings because he has invented a new style of painting. In time this opinion is validated by Mr. Vollard and the rest of the world. Through his son's belief in him and his own artistic efforts, the painter Paul Cezanne achieves financial success and is able to live quietly and frugally on his earnings, continuing to paint his beloved scenes and studies. "Cezanne and the Apple Boy" is very sensitively written and contains a number of small reproductions of some of Cezanne's famous paintings. "Cezanne and the Apple Boy" is especially for children ages 4-7.

The Anholt's Artists series is highly recommended for young children

I've been introducing my seven-year-old daughter to some of the world's great artists through picture books and art books, and have found Anholt's Artists series to be informative and inspiring. In Cezanne and the Apple Boy, a young boy goes off to the mountains to visit his father, the French artist and post-Impressionist painter, Paul Cezanne. Cezanne Sr. is viewed as a sort of wild mountain man, a big, hulking person viewed with suspicion by the locals. It is only later that the painter's works find an audience, and he becomes famous.

The story is beautifully told, in a narrative style that appeals to young children, ages 4-8. I highly recommend the Anholt's Artists series as a wonderful way to introduce young children to the world's great artists.

Spot on!

This is a fantastic book. I also recommend watching or reading the "Crash Course" series before reading this book. Actually, I recommend watching it regardless. While there are many intelligent voices out there in the alternative economics space, Chris Martenson and Adam Taggart are unique. They do not rage against the system, wishing that they were the ones pulling the strings and raking in billions. Many of the industry insiders seem to be driven by the same forces of avarice that motivate the current holders of power. Chris and Adam, however, advocate an alternative lifestyle that focuses on resilience in all its forms, so that regardless of what the future might hold, you will be capable of not only surviving, but thriving. It is a philosophy that I find perfectly rational and ethically sound. Kudos to these guys who put their lives where their mouths are.

This book focuses on the 8 forms of capital that they have already discussed in a podcast with the permaculture specialists. I listened to the podcast several times already, so I am already familiar with many of the ideas in this book. The concept of capital in other forms besides financial is key to changing your ideas of what holds true value in life. I highly recommend this book, as well as visiting their website peakprosperity.com to listen to their podcasts and read their articles.

Not the insight of Crash Course by any means.

Sort of a self help psychology book but too little in the way of really concrete to dos with measurable predicted outcomes. Sorta suggests if you go into the crisis with the right attitude you might be alright. I am a huge fan of the Crash Course and the work of Peak Prosperity. While as an introduction to this subject matter some may find the book a valuable read but for those well versed in the area, I found it to be lacking in tangible, game changing solutions to the challenges we face.

8 forms of capital

I guess time will tell, but I have a feeling this will be a life transforming book for me along the lines of “Your Money or Your Life” by Joe Dominguez and Vicki Robin which played a major role in helping me get a handle on money and make a living as an artist.

Chris and Adam are particularly good at presenting information to help shift narratives to ones that are more useful. Right now my major take away from “Prosper!” is presenting and clarifying the idea of prosperity being a function of 8 forms of capital. Our standard narrative would suggest that prosperity can be found with just lots of money and perhaps material goods. I think that most of us know that while money and material goods are an element of prosperity there is more to it if you really want a fulfilling life.

Their 8 forms of capital are:
Financial capital
Living capital
Material capital
Knowledge capital
Emotional capital
Social capital
Cultural capital
Time capital

“Your Money or Your Life” really brings forth the interrelations between financial capital, time capital, and material capital, honestly in a better way than “Prosper!” does. However, it really only hinted at the other forms of capital which Chris and Adam’s book make explicit. Thus I’m seeing “Prosper!” as a sort of companion book to “Your Money or Your Life” in helping to guide one to achieving a fulfilling life. They explain each of the forms and offer suggestions for actionable steps to deepen ones resources in each of them. I find that in many ways I have already been pursuing these various types of capital, but having this clear framework or narrative is really helping me to think about and more directly pursue them.

I feel I should note that Chris and Adam are approaching this within a narrative of responding to the problems within our economy, energy resources, and environmental issues/resources. These are all things I feel are very worthy of our attention though for understandable reasons, make many very uncomfortable.

Ultimately what this book, “Prosper!” is about is trying to help us live fulfilling lives now with as much resiliency as possible to maintain a high quality of life regardless of what comes our way in the future. I’d suggest giving it a read. Hopefully it will resonate with you as well, and thus assist in making your world a better place to be.

I would recommend this book with CD. Every voice teacher seems to have his own philosophy, but only with daily exercises can one develop his/her voice. This CD helps me do my exercises and I've seen a dramatic improvemment. Like a personal trainer on CD! Definately worth it. The whole thing is the cost of one lesson with a professional teacher.

Excellent Exercises

The CDs that come with the book offer excellent vocal exercises that strenghthen and expand the voice and range. The book and the CDs are far less expensive than a voice teacher. There is also a poster with a diagram of how the voice is produced-how it resonates throughout the body. An understanding of this is helpful in learning how to "place" the tones.
Also, Mr. Allen's descriptions of where the resonators are and what they will feel like if you are singing properly are very helpful.
I recommend this book to any singer who wants to get her chops together.

Not the best, but the good.

Good for preparing USMLE CK.

The questions are a little bit shorter and easier than those of UW. So it looks quite inappropriate to prepare the exam.

BUT!! As you know, studying with computer makes you do lots of worthless things - web surfing!!!. So it's better to read more B-grade questions than to read less A-grade questions.

So I recommend this for medical students.
