About the Author
Issam El-Said (1938-1988) was an Iraqi artist and scholar. He earned an Architecture degree from Corpus Christi College, Cambridge in 1961; studied art at Hammersmith College of Art and Design, London and prepared for a PhD on the Methodology of Geometric Proportioning in Islamic Architecture at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1988, which was sadly not completed due to his untimely death that year. As an artist, he achieved great renown and his works are in private and public collections worldwide including the British Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the National Museums in Baghdad and Amman.

good book but all in black & white don't expect any beautiful photos as examples. the ways they do these designs it is just what you 've got. Mathematics explainations only useful for experts but the drawings speak for themselves happily. Way too expensive, a souple cover and smaller size would have been enough

Deeper understanding of Islamic geometric pattern making

This book reveals the stuctures of Islamic geomtric pattern making. There are quite a few "pattern books" with many examples of beautiful patterns. However this book reveals the concept of "the repeat unit of a geometric pattern" and the principles of measure involved. There are three main repeat units. It also contains many beautiful examples of patterns that can be generated by each repeat unit.

I thoroughly recommend this book for anyone interested in gaining a deeper understanding of Islamic geometric patterns.

Shows tile design on Muslim monuments like the Taj Mahal.

If you are interested in high school maths or tiling in general this book shows how Islamic artists create most of the geometric tiling patterns found in Muslim monuments such as the Taj Mahal in India or the Alhambra in Spain. Issam shows how using the ancient greek techniques of a compass and a straight edge all of the tile designs are achieved. He also goes into the history of how these tile patterns were achieved. This book is written after Issam died from his notes and other previous work and is a summary of Issam's work so it probably represents the last chance to have these tile patterns explained. As a maths teacher myself I have never been so impressed by a book. It not only has great content but its diagrams are beautiful.

About the Author
Born in London, Len Deighton served in the RAF before graduating from the Royal College of Art (which recently elected him a Senior Fellow). While in New York City working as a magazine illustrator he began writing his first novel, The Ipcress File, which was published in 1962. He is now the author of more than thirty books of fiction and non-fiction. At present living in Europe, he has, over the years, lived with his family in ten different countries from Austria to Portugal.

Gallic espionage

Full disclosure: I have been a great fan of Deighton for years: I prefer him to the doyen of spy authors, John LeCarre--mainly because Deighton's plain writing style appeals to me far more than Le Carre's somewhat patronising tones as if sometimes he writes the way 'we toffs talk together', so get used to it!' 'An Expensive Place to Die' is one of Deighton's lesser-known works: but the narrator, never identified, seems to be the precursor of Bernard Samson, the dry-witted, sarcastic Cockney who leads us through the labyrinthine plots of Deighton's GAME, SET and MATCH trilogy [followed by HOOK, LINE and SINKER].
Perhaps, this novel deserves to be relatively little known. The plot is lightweight and there are no memorable characters--except inevitably the luckless narrator whose employers one has to assume are MI6, Britain's Secret Intelligence Service. But the novel's backdrop--Paris in the 1960s--is what saves the book: I knew Paris back then, too, and anyone who loves the City of Light, will enjoy this book. The sidewalk cafes, small artist studios, the shabby seventeenth arrondissement, the ubiquitous, blended odor of garlic and Gauloise, the cobbled streets baked by an early-summer heat wave, the resonant burps of two-stroke motorcycles--it's all here, hanging on a fragile but still very readable plot.

EARLY LEN DEIGHTON NOVEL -- NOT UP TO HIS LATER WORK

On the whole, I am a fan of most of Len Deighton's later works particularly all nine of the Bernard Samson Novels. I think that reading one of an author's early novels after having read, and enjoyed, much of his later work, leaves you ripe for a little disappointment. That was my reaction here. He just hadn't completely found his "voice" in this novel which was originally published in 1966, well before those nine Bernard Samson novels I mentioned earlier (Copyright dates 1984 through 1996).

I found the plot unnecessarily complex. It starts with an anonymous spy, residing in Paris, who receives a bundle of documents from a courier with the instructions to deliver them to a man he knows as Datt. But he is not do just deliver them at a convenient time or place. This would be too easy. He is to keep them until Datt gets them from him in his (Datt's) own time and by whatever method Datt decides on. Datt's method involves kidnapping him, injecting him with "truth serum." and having the documents stolen from his room while he is so detained. An interesting delivery, indeed!

This is the beginning of the the United States deliberate revelation of certain Nuclear Weaponry information, or perhaps well disguised misinformation, to representatives of the Chinese Communist government.

During the course of __AN EXPENSIVE PLACE TO DIE__, there are kidnappings, murders, scenes in a high end brothel that caters to diplomats, where dossiers on these diplomats are developed, and where films are made of them in compromising positions. There are surprises, double-crosses, and unexpected revelations around every corner before we finallly sort out the good(?) guys from the bad (also ?) guys.

If you like Len Deighton's later novels, this is a good book to read from the standpoint of seeing how much he developed as a spy novelist through the years, and it certainly contains the seeds of many of the themes he developed in his later novels.

In the words of a current movie critic, "I give it a moderate thumbs up."

The French Connection

I found An Expensive Place to Die (1967) the most readable of Len Deighton’s first four spy novels. It may or may not feature Deighton’s Man From WOOC(P) as its protagonist as his affiliation is never mentioned. In any case, he is some sort of British agent working on a rather hazy (to both him and the reader) assignment in Paris that has something to do with passing nuclear fallout data from American atomic experiments to the Chinese (China would test its first hydrogen bomb shortly after the book’s publication, which does make the story somewhat topical).

My problem with this book is that because the stakes are not made clear, it’s hard to work up any sense of suspense. The unnamed (I think he actually is named at one point but it could very be a fake name) agent does get into a couple of scrapes, including one where he is dosed with LSD as a kind of truth serum(!) but the gripping sense of true danger and tragic consequences for failure never really appear, at least they didn’t for me.

That said, An Expensive Place to Die is a modestly entertaining contribution to the swelling ranks of James Bond-ish spy literature that Ian Fleming spawned in the 1960s. In fact, this might be Deighton’s most Bondish effort with its alluring femme fatale of uncertain loyalties and eccentric villain with elaborate lair. What was also interesting to me was Deighton’s portrayal of Paris about a year before the events of 1968 with its trendinista pockets sitting side by side with squalor and all overshadowed by a truly creepy state security structure that seems to have few legal constraints.

About the Author
Nancy Lee Cecil has had a rich and varied background in education, as an elementary school teacher and a literacy specialist in New York, urban Savannah, Georgia, and in the public schools in the U.S. Virgin Islands. As a result of these experiences, she is especially attuned to the needs of linguistically and culturally diverse children. Cecil received her doctorate from the University of Buffalo and currently teaches in the Department of Teacher Credentialing at California State University, Sacramento, where she was awarded the prestigious Outstanding Educator Award. She has written nineteen books on literacy. Susan Baker has taught in public schools at the kindergarten through high school levels in Soledad, Watsonville, and Los Angeles, California; Arlington, Virginia; and Mexicali, Mexico. She has worked primarily in bilingual settings with students who are English learners, and she has taught literacy in English and Spanish. Baker earned her doctorate from Stanford University and currently teaches in the Department of Teacher Credentialing at California State University, Sacramento. Her research interests include the development of biliteracy, the use of culturally sustaining pedagogy in teacher education, and the fostering of teacher/parent relationships across social class, cultural, racial, and linguistic boundaries. She is currently the Principal Investigator for the CSU, Sacramento branch of the California Reading and Literature Project. Albert S. Lozano has been a third-grade bilingual teacher in San Bernardino, and has a Bilingual Crosscultural Language and Academic Development (BCLAD)credential and a Master of Arts degree from California State University, San Bernardino, and a doctorate from Stanford University. He teaches courses on elementary literacy, English language development (ELD), and specially designed academic instruction in English (SDAIE) in the Department of Teacher Credentialing at CSU, Sacramento, as well as thesis writing and education research in the Graduate and Professional Studies in Education program. His current research focuses on the effectiveness of credential programs in preparing teachers to instruct English learners; fostering the oral English proficiency of English learners; and helping to develop bilingualism/biliteracy.

About the Author
Raymond Chang received his B.Sc. degree in chemistry from London University, England and his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Yale University. After doing postdoctoral research at Washington University and teaching for a year at Hunter College, he joined the chemistry at Williams College, where he has taught since 1968. Info's There, But it's Soulless, Rootless & Mathless

I took a couple of courses in Chemistry 30 years ago back in high school and then a couple more in college. My son just finished using this book in HIS college Chemistry classes and I thought I'd read through it for grins. I wasn't very impressed. Oh, the information's all there. But, it's presented in the manner of someone having gone through a checklist to see all the Chemistry subjects that should be taught in general Chemistry and then just including them. It's hard to explain, but I think the problem is the lack of historical background in the book. The book has little historical snippets on Chemistry *personages*, but it doesn't follow along the historical *path of discovery* to explain WHY Chemistry is what it is. The end result is that the student is presented with dry, bare facts with no place to hang them in his head.

Another problem is the lack of math in the book. I mean, general Chemistry is not exactly a higher math subject (it's an empirical science, instead). But, as an example, on page 277, in the midst of the Quantum Mechanics section, there's a sidebar explaining:

Shanto Iyengar holds the Chandler Chair in Communication at Stanford University where he is also Professor of Political Science and Director of the Political Communication Laboratory. Iyengar’s areas of expertise include the role of mass media in democratic societies, public opinion, and political psychology. Iyengar’s research has been supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the Ford Foundation, the Pew Charitable Trusts, and the Hewlett Foundation. I pre-ordered this book and was not disappointed. If you are into the art and lore of Magic: The Gathering this is a must have. The book has weight with solid binding and when gently opened there was no cracking sounds like a cheap coffee table book. This is a high-quality production book. If you are like me and had to strain your eyes to appreciate the artwork, this book is a godsend as many of the illustrations are enlarged to fully appreciate the details by your favorite artists.

For those who have been following the lore of Innistrad, this book further adds details you won't get from Wizards site thanks to James Wyatt's contribution to the details (for example:"Nahiri has played on their discontent and given them new masters to serve."). I really think Wyatt's deep background from the early days of D&D was invaluable for the book. In fact, the book reads like a classic D&D Dragon Magazine article which further expounds on the general lore.

Back to the artwork, there are many two-page spreads of cards from SOI and even Eldritch Moon! Perhaps they timed the release intentionally! I read some reviews that the previous artbook for BFZ block had low resolution but that's nonsense after seeing the prints in this book. The details are amazing.

The appendix is really fantastic as it delves into how and why Innistrad mechanics are so special. Unfortunately, upon initial look, it doesn't include Eldirtch Moon's mechanics like Meld but it's still a fascinating look into how Wizards R&D operates.

All in all, this is one of my favorite M:TG item of all time aside from the cards themselves.There is so much flavor and information about the Innistrad plane. I hope Wizards will continue this tradition with Kaledesh and beyond to satisfy the hard-core lore lovers like myself!

Plus: I love the fresh smell of the book, it has a very much a "new car" smell.

Welcome to Innistrad! The worst place for humans ever lol

If you are a fan of the story and/or art from Innistard, Dark Ascension and Avacyn Restored set that came out in 2012 or the recent Shadows Over Innistrad and soon to be released Eldritch Moon then this book of 239 pages of awesomeness is for you. This book not only contains a summary of all the major events that happen on Innistrad from the original set in 2012 and continue in the current 2016 set but also has extra details regarding the provinces of Innistrad, the humans, vampires, werewolves, etc that live there and ultimately what it is like in the plane. The art work is just...wow...freaking gorgeous. I mean the artwork on the cards are already nice but seeing them on these pages. You get a a lot of artwork and lore with this book so I wholeheartedly recommend it if you are a fan of Magic the Gathering or enjoy Gothic art work.

A fantastic book for any fan of Magic: the Gathering especially the Innistrad blocks.

When I bought this book, I expected it to be mostly, if not all, just art from the set and nothing else. However, it's actually a deep and descriptive tool to learn the history of Innistrad. It even goes through all of the main characters, monsters, places, and events of the original block as well as the new sets: Shadows Over Innistrad and Eldritch Moon. The art is mostly from the cards, but there's some new art sprinkled throughout.

If you liked the Innistrad sets, I highly recommend it. It's a high quality book with high value.

This is the best TOEFL book I have ever studied or taught. I have been a teacher of TOEFL preparation courses since 2008, and I've tried most TOEFL books, and this one is the best. It is very simple to understand and to follow, very clear instruction and practical examples. I took the TOEFL exams two times so far, and I scored 111 and 112. My advice is BUY THIS BOOK, don't hesitate and please do not be fooled by the reviews of the other books, I have tried them, and they are more theoretical than practical. The Bob Hurley profiled here isn't as well known to the average sports fan as his son, Bobby, the Duke University basketball superstar. But the elder Hurley's profile should rise quickly, thanks to sportswriter Wojnarowski's fine and detailed look at the "miracle" Hurley has achieved as coach for more than 30 years of the men's basketball team at St. Anthony's High School in Jersey City, NJ. Wojnarowski provides an excellent look at the phenomenon of the school itself, which Hurley and two Felician nuns managed to keep open even after it lost funding from the church, educating "the poorest of the poor" (more than 50% of the students' families lived below the poverty line). He delivers a finely etched portrait of Hurley, whose passion and drive enabled him to construct "a national powerhouse program out of an enrollment that struggled to stay at 200" and keep the school's decade-long streak of 100% college acceptance. In 31 years as head basketball coach at St. Anthony High School in Jersey City, New Jersey, Bob Hurley has won 22 state titles. One might expect St. Anthony to be a sprawling urban campus with thousands of students from which to cull elite basketball players. On the contrary, it's a tiny school, constantly on the edge of bankruptcy and held together by a determined band of Felician nuns. Nearly all of Hurley's players have attended college, many on basketball scholarships. New Jersey sportswriter Wojnarowski chronicles St. Anthony's 2003-04 season, which began with a group of players Hurley categorized as undermotivated and unfocused. They weren't for long. The season was a success, and the four seniors all accepted scholarships to Division I basketball programs. This inspiring account of good people making a difference one step at a time stands as a compelling counterpoint to Ian O'Connor's The Jump (p.1129), in which basketball talent is exploited at various levels for the profit of all but the player. A testament for all athletic coaches!

This book is a testament to all those high school basketball coaches, who dedicate their lives to teaching kids to succeed in life through the discipline they endure while being coached by a tough coach. I read this book, and it brought back so many memories of growing up in Hudson County, NJ in the 1980s and playing for one tough basketball coach, Hank Morano, from Emerson High School in Union City, NJ. In fact, Coach Hurley mentions coach Morano in his book, when he yells at his players for not knowing the name of the coach for a high school team that was so eager to play them. He goes on to mention all the high school coaches of north Jersey and then south Jersey and is upset that his kids don't even bother to learn the names of the coaches from other schools. I remember coach Hurley very well. In 1982 we competed against St. Anthony for the county title, and we lost by 2 points at the St. Peter's college gym. We went on to win the state sectional title in 1982 and again in 1983. I went to coach Hurley's summer basketball camp in Pennsylvania twice, and his week long camp at St. Peter's college. There are so many names in the book that I remember from growing up. Too many to mention here. It was great to read this book, and if you grew up playing high school basketball, you would also enjoy this book. R. Lorenzo, Esq. Miami, FL.

More than just basketball!

I love basketball and have been a big Duke fan even before my brother graduated from there in 1988. Bobby Hurley is our favorite player. He is our favorite because, like him, we played point guard, not real tall, white, quick and thought we lived to play the game. From the book and not just the Bobby part we were not even close to being committed. This is my second read and it is also from a parents view. As a parent, the consistency, or lack of in many players but what coach Hurley provided, is all important. Coach Hurley's days never ended and seasons ended but the next was immediately after. And you have the challenges of the school and the Sisters. Health, not wealth, helping kids and more it is the life many of us lead. Good way to approach life, as a person or a parent.

Although the narrative is aittle choppy sometimes and it is difficult to identify the players when they are sometimes referred to by nicknames and sometimes not, this is a story of sport as a metaphor for life with a coach who not only teaches fundamentals of sport but of life.
He lovingly bangs heads and curses and recreates the sport before it was all a out the money.
Miracle shows that behind every saved life is a loving and gifted mentor with an eye on the future of his kids and his neighborhood school.
I was lucky. I grew up in such a system. I'm not sure there are many left.
Hats off to Coach Hurley.
