About the Author
CHRIS JOHNSON came to violin making through making guitars as a hobby. He attended Newark School of Violin Making and graduated with a distinction. Since then he has established a workshop in Leicestershire where he makes violins in modern and baroque forms, and exact copies of fine instruments. He also repairs and restores old instruments. Chris Johnson lives near Loughborough, Leicestershire with his wife and two sons. ROY COURTNALL is a luthier, writer and lecturer in musical instrument technology. After obtaining a BA Hons degree in sculpture from London University he went on to develop his instrument-making skills, establishing himself as a luthier. He has published a collection of plans of musical instruments, and is the author of Making Master Guitars also published by Hale. Roy Courtnall lives in Lincoln. ADRIAN LUCAS obtained a degree in architecture at Leeds Polytechnic in 1978. He has worked as a musician for many years and has also run his own architectural business. Most of his time is now occupied making and repairing guitars and teaching guitar making at an adult education class. He was the illustrator for Making Master Guitars by Roy Courtnall. Adrian Lucas lives in Lincoln with his wife and two daughters.

An exellent guide for luthiers of all levels

I am a middle-schooler who has an immense interest in violinmaking. I am currently carving a scroll by myself with no guidance except this book. I have never seen this done or anything. And this book is wonderful. If this book can tell a middle-schooler who had no experience in woodworking how to make a scroll, it can tell anybody how to carve a violin!

This is a very excellent book on Violin history and construction. It's great for the experienced luthier or woodworker interested in building a violin for the first time. However, it would require some processing and maybe some supplementary text and plans for a beginner or intermediate builder.

Koolhaas, Dutch architect, author (Delirious New York) and cult figure, wants architecture to be "a chaotic adventure," and this massive tome certainly is. About the Author
Rem Koolhaas is founder of the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (O.M.A.); the firm's most important projects include the Lille Grand Palais in Lille; the Kunsthal in Rotterdam; Netherlands Dance Theatre in The Hague; Nexus Housing in Fukuoka; the Dutch House in Holland; and Villa dall'Ava in Paris, all of which are included in S,M,L,XL. Koolhaas is author of the seminal Delirious New York and professor in practice of architecture and urban design at the Harvard Graduate School of Design.

Bruce Mau founded the critically acclaimed firm Bruce Mau Design in 1985. He is the author of Life Style and Massive Change.

Rem Koolhaas, in terms of theoretical discourse sets the bar in SMLXL for architects, urban designers and planners at an international scale. This books is the foundation of many of his most recent work. It's theories, mainly in regards to the 'Generic City' are visible in our worlds largest cities to the most rural areas on Earth. Truly a must have for anyone in the design or built environment fields.

Huge book with great architectural thoughts and graphic design

I have to say that it's a bit difficult to go through, because it's a GIANT book. I tried reading every bit of it from the first page, and it seemed like I'd never finish. I put it down for a little while, and now I just pick it up and start reading from any random page. I don't agree with some of Rem's design ideals but I've learned a lot from this book.
Another thing to mention here is the great graphic design by Mau, it gives you a lot of ideas just from looking into any random page! I learned about Mau in school and absolutely love his designs!
Very worthy book to have in your book collection!

The book is certainly fun to flip through - the design is amazing and the images say a lot. I found myself confused, however, with some of the content and overall did not find it particularly accessible / functional as a tool for understanding D.M.A. and their work.

What I love about this author is that he makes his case without slinging mud on his covenantal Christian brothers & sisters. Whether you agree with his conclusions or not you will appreciate the high road he takes in making his case. The Church is in desperate need of more of this high standard on both side of the Church/Israel question.

Too dry and factual

I have to say, as travel guides go, this one is pretty dry. There's a lot of facts in this book, but most of it is listings/information, totally fact, and I can get that elsewhere on the Internet in a more easily searched way. When I buy a travel guide it is for recommendations/opinions, and all I can say is, they're a small part of the 1109 pages. This book certainly did not make me want to jump on a plane to Australia.

Peltier asserts that he did not commit these murders, writing simply, Innocence has a single voice that can only say over and over, I didnt do it. Guilt has a thousand voices, all of them lies. (In his preface, former attorney general Ramsey Clark makes a compelling argument for why we should believe Peltier, a case also made by Peter Matthiessen in his much-litigated book In the Spirit of Crazy Horse). In this anthology, Peltier charts the course of his activism, describing his evolution from a young man on a South Dakota reservation who wanted what other young men in his circumstances wanteda car, a jobto a political organizer keenly aware of the injustices visited past and present on Americas indigenous peoples. Although he too easily falls into sloganeering (We are the voices of the earth. We speak for those who are not yet born. When you exclude us, you exclude your own conscience. We are your conscience!), Peltier has much to say about American Indian politics, a dauntingly complex set of issues; among other things, he insists that the US government follow a Canadian model in offering reparations for historical wrongs. He also advances the plausible view that the siege at Wounded Knee was a sideshow meant to disguise a deal through which a uranium-rich portion of the Pine Ridge Sioux reservation was ceded to the federal government. Writing more personally, Peltier recounts the intricacies of living behind bars. As a houseguest in hell, he writes, you learn that the devil has many mansions, and you keep shuttling between them for no known reason. INNOCENT MAN--AND EVERYBODY KNOWS

I LIVED IN NEBRASKA WHEN "INCIDENT AT OGLALLA" RESERVATION IN S.DAKOTA HAPPENED. (SEE THE DVD).
HUNDREDS OF INDIANS KILLED- MEN,WOMEN,CHILDREN,BABIES . AND, WE KNEW IF THAT REZ WASN'T SITTING ON ONE OF THE LARGEST URANIUM DEPOSITS IN THE U.S., THEY COULD HAVE LIVED IN PEACE.
THEN 2 CIA AGENTS GET KILLED, MAYBE BY THEIR OWN OPERATIVES. THREE INDIANS CHARGED..JURY IN IOWA FOUND TWO INNOCENT OF ALL CHARGES. SO THEY MOVED THE PELTIER TRIAL TO THE MOST HOSTILE OF ENVIRONMENTS, GAVE FALSE EVIDENCE, THREATENED WITNESSES, BLATANTLY LIED UNDER OATH... AND FOUND A CLEARLY INNOCENT MAN GUILTY-- OF STANDING UP FOR INDIAN'S RIGHTS AGAINST "THE MACHINE OF THE MAN" THE CIA.

Leonard Peltier: He Didn't Do It! Read his story and send a Petition to the President for a Presidential Pardon!

There is NO doubt whatsoever, that Leonard Peltier has been imprisoned falsely. Even A District Court Judge who reviewed the evidence several yrs ago, ruled that the evidence against him didn't hold up, circumstantial AND contrived. It is within the power of the President to give Leonard Peltier a Presidenntial pardon. There is a Petition online that one can sign and send to Obama. Whether or not it will do any good remains to be seen. This is a travesty and Justice was denied AND continues to be. He's in his 70's and ill. He needs to be released NOW and should have been decades ago because He Did Not Kill the two Agents. From what can be learned from reading in Peltier's own words (as the man who was there!) it is even more possible that the two agents were killed by what the military calls "friendly fire," but rather than own up, they pinned the deaths on the man they most wanted imprisoned: Leonard Peltier, and they got away with it.

Free Leonard Peltier, political prisoner for a crime he didn't commit!!!!

I cannot emphasize enough that what we, as a nation, have done in the name of, so-called, progress is atrocious and abominable. I mean we decry what other countries do in terms of policies and prisoners, but when it comes to our own national priorities, we can do no wrongs. Unfortunately as this book exquisitely expresses, we're no better than, say, South Africa during apartheid. We just dress it up in different terms and don't even acknowledge such when it goes on, despite the many attempts to open up our shadowy government policies to civilian viewing and oversight. Everyone should read this book, in my opinion, because it underscores the gross negligence of the US government toward the native peoples of this country.
