This theory was developed to address what the author sees as a perpetual mismatch between present theories in social gerontology and existing empirical data.

The development towards gerotranscendence can involve some overlooked developmental changes that are related to increased life satisfaction, as self-described by individuals. The gerotranscendent individual typically experiences a redefinition of the Self and of relationships to others and a new understanding of fundamental existential questions:

• The individual becomes less self-occupied and at the same time more selective in the choice of social and other activities.
• There is an increased feeling of affinity with past generations and a decreased interest in superfluous social interaction.
• The individual might also experience a decrease in interest in material things and a greater need for solitary "meditation." Positive solitude becomes more important.
• There is also often a feeling of cosmic communion with the spirit of the universe, and a redefinition of time, space, life and death.

Gerotranscendence does NOT imply any state of withdrawal or disengagement, as sometimes erroneously believed. It is not the old disengagement theory in new disguise. Rather, it is a theory that describes a developmental pattern beyond the old dualism of activity and disengagement.

The author supports his theory with insightful qualitative in-depth interviews with older persons and quantitative studies. In addition, Tornstam illustrates the practical implications of the theory of gerotranscendence for professionals working with older adults in care settings. A useful Appendix contains suggestions of how to facilitate personal development toward gerotranscendence.

Gerotranscendence: A Developmental Theory of Positive Aging

Lars Tornstam is a pioneer in the field of gerontology having led the educational and advocacy movement on behalf of older people in Sweden and Denmark. I heard about him through studying Joan Erikson's work on expanding the Eriksonian Stage Theory beyond the original 8 stages which she writes about in The Life Cycle Completed. This book of Dr Tornstam's is one of the best books I have read in my 10 years of studying aging. His articulate descriptions support what I have experienced often in my service as a psychotherapist and case manager and loved one of many people in their 80's and 90's including my own beloved 92 year old mother. I highly recommend this book and think it should be part of gerontological training programs everywhere.

At last, someone is listening to older people!

This is a refreshing book on aging. At last, someone in a position of authority is daring to find some positive aspects of getting old. For much too long psychologists and geriatric "experts" have been stuck in the rut of viewing old age as being only pathological in its nature. Lars Tornstam, a Swedish gerontologist, was inspired to investigate and write this book by a discrepancy he witnessed between theories of aging and what older people actually said about their experience of it. The result- a theory that there may be some positive developments which occur in the process of aging. "It's all downhill from here" may just be a lot of prejudiced bunk!

Find out what older people have to say about it for themselves. Their views are not all just the result of dementia. Nature provides positive development in all the other stages of human life. Why not in old age too? I highly recommend this book for all those interested in the aging process (we all get there sometime). It may be the start of a new and valid perspective. For a long time people thought the earth was flat- it certainly looks like it through the senses, doesn't it? Put those stereotyped views of old age away, you may be glad that you did when you get there! A highly readable and understandable book.

Roy L. Moore is Professor of Journalism and Dean of the College of Mass Communication at Middle Tennessee State University. He holds a Ph.D. in Mass Communication from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a J.D. from the Georgia State University College of Law.

Michael D. Murray is University of Missouri Board of Curators' Professor and Chair of the Faculty Senate and University Assembly at University of Missouri-St. Louis. He received his undergraduate degree from St. Louis University, and his Ph.D. from the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Good, well-rounded, heavy read.

This a great book for Media Law and Ethics. It has a lot of great case references that make it easier to understand concepts and a great way to reference back. The only downside is that it is quite a heavy read because there is so much information packed into it, so I found myself re-reading a lot to let it sink in.

It fails to fully grasp the importance of international law's decentralized institutional form in securing some measure of accountability in international relations. It thus misleads through functional analogy and, in doing so, potentially exacerbates legitimacy deficits. There are enough conceptual weaknesses and blindspots in the legal-theoretical models against which international law is so frequently challenged to show that the perceived problem arises more in theory, than in practice. About the Author
Now retired, Bill Johnson has taught heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration for more than two decades in various technical colleges and factory schools. A graduate of Southern Technical Institute, a branch of Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Georgia, he has also served as Service Manager for a major manufacturer for six years. Mr. Johnson owned his own HVAC/R business for 10 years and has been a member of the Refrigeration Service Engineers Society and the American Society of Heating Refrigerating Air Conditioning Engineers. His authoring credits include three major textbooks on the market today as well as their ancillary materials. He also writes a monthly article -- BTU Buddy -- that is available online.

Kevin Standiford has been in the technology fields of Engineering, Manufacturing Processes, HVACR, Process Piping and Robotics for more than 15 years. While attending college to obtain his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering Technology, he worked for McClelland Consulting Engineers as a Mechanical Designer, designing HVAC, complex processing piping, and cogeneration systems for commercial and industrial applications. Mr. Standiford also has experience working for one of the leading HVAC engineering firms in the state of Arkansas, Pettit and Pettit Consulting Engineers, as a Mechanical Design Engineer. His career then led him to teaching engineering, design, and technology courses for Garland County Community College. Maintaining his focus on education, Mr. Standiford has served as an author and consultant for a number of published textbooks and learning resources in the HVAC, CAD, and Plumbing fields. Today he is a full-time consultant working for both the publishing and engineering industries and a part-time instructor.

Practical heating book

I found this seller, transaction, and book to all be fantastic. The book goes into thorough details on heating systems and has been a tremendous help in furthering my education. The seller shipped the book quickly and would buy form them again if the occasion arises.

Not a bad read, would recommend.
I don't want to say this is a great book. But after reading 4 other books on heating and this one was by far the best.

Books I've *NOT* enjoyed:
Heating technology: poorly made much to boring to read.
Audel books (2) on heating: old outdated info, that seemed to me, these 2 books had 1950's info and style of writing. And pages of useless info that I can only only be described as filler from the manufacturer.

About the Author
A graduate of Cornell University, Brown University Medical School and George Washington University Hospital residency program, Laurence B. Brown is an ophthalmic surgeon, a retired Air Force officer, the medical director and chief ophthalmologist of a major eye center in the Middle East. The author of four books of comparative religion, he is also an ordained interfaith minister with a passion for writing reality-based fiction. For the past two decades, he has divided his time between America, England, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia. Dr. Brown's immediate family consists of his wife, three daughters and an ever changing assortment of hamsters and parrots.

The author does a good job of weaving little known yet very important historical facts into an entertaining story line. This should be required reading for every seminary student and ordained minister, Christian, Catholic or Jewish!

Best book I've read in a while...

I recommend this book for honest truth seekers and those who appreciate really good story telling! Dr Brown once again combines truths and fiction to really get the reader thinking, while taking them on a roller coaster ride. The use of characters and their interactions are original and their are some truly shocking facts that most today are unaware of.

If you are not one for being spoon fed, then read this book and follow up on the links given at the end.You won't regret it. ;-)
