About the Author
Jim Meehan is one of the most celebrated figures in the drinks industry. Before opening PDT, he worked in major New York restaurants and bars, including Five Points, Gramercy Tavern, and The Pegu Club. He is a contributing editor of Food & Wine magazine's annual cocktail book, Mr. Boston's Bartender Guide, and Sommelier Journal. Meehan has been recognized as a rising star mixologist by Star Chefs Online Culinary Magazine, Cheers Magazine and as the 2009 American Bartender of the Year at Tales of the Cocktail. He lives in New York City's East Village. Chris Gall has created designs for clients that include Ford, Nike, Pepsi, Shell Oil, Sony, McDonald's, and U.S. Steel. His work has been showcased in virtually every major publication in America, including Time, Newsweek, Forbes, People and the New York Times. An essential book -- belongs on every cocktail lover's shelf

A lot of cocktail books are published every year, some of them containing thousands of recipes, some of them focusing on only a few dozen. Many of these books aren't especially useful, presenting recipes chosen with little care or attention to detail. With books like that, it's caveat emptor and bibitor.

Not so with Jim Meehan's PDT Cocktail Book, an essential volume from one of the cocktail world's brightest stars. Meehan is the manager of PDT, one of New York's most celebrated cocktail bars. Prior to that he worked under Audrey Sanders at Pegu Club. His credentials are impeccable.

As soon as you pick it up, you know this is a quality book; substantial and well bound, with thick glossy paper. The illustrations (by Chris Gall) are bright, colorful, whimsical and eye-catching.

The PDT Cocktail Book shares Meehan's advice on designing a bar, stocking spirits and choosing the right ingredients and glassware, along with his tips and techniques for properly mixing drinks. A novice mixologist can pick up this book and gain a solid introduction to the subject, even if they have little or no knowledge to begin with. But the experienced bartender will also find much to learn from here.

The heart of The PDT Cocktail Book is, of course, the drinks. It contains over 300 recipes: about half of them original drinks served at PDT, along with many classic cocktails, plus some new suggestions from friends and colleagues. This isn't a hodgepodge of random recipes either. These are hand-picked and tested; the real drinks as served in a world-class bar.

The ingredients and instructions for each drink are clearly spelled out. But Meehan goes one step further, including (where possible) the provenance of the drink, giving credit to the person who invented it. As such, The PDT Cocktail Book represents a valuable volume of cocktail history, helping those who are interested to trace the origins of various cocktails. (Along those lines, it also contains an excellent bibliography.)

Another interesting thing Meehan does is recommend specific brands of spirits for all the recipes. Thus we see that he makes his gin and tonics with Tanqueray, his Martinis with Plymouth, and his Aviations with Beefeater. These aren't hard and fast rules; they're simply guidelines, telling us how they make the drinks at PDT. They represent a starting point for building the flavor profile of the drink. You can (and should) try combinations of your own.

Meehan's book will appeal most to those who already have an interest in and facility with mixology. Any bartender would be strongly urged to buy this right away. But even the amateur will enjoy this beautiful book.

If you have any interest in drinking well, you will appreciate thumbing through it. There are so many interesting ideas for ways of combining flavors here. It also teaches a lot about spirits and how to use them. If you don't have the ingredients to make the drinks at home, copy the recipes down and take them to your favorite bartender and let him/her mix them for you.

The PDT Cocktail Book joins Gary Regan's The Joy of Mixology and Dale Degroff's The Craft of the Cocktail as the indispensable monographs on modern cocktails and spirits. It belongs on every cocktail lover's shelf.

Good, but not great, cocktail book

I am a big fan of Meehan's, and I was very excited to see this volume published. Meehan's is one of the most authoritative and inventive voices on the subject of cocktails, both classic and modern, and this entry into the crowded world of cocktail books is decidedly highly anticipated.

To be fair, this is, undoubtedly, an excellent cocktail book. It contains interesting twists on some classic staples (Benton's Old-Fashioned, with bacon-infused bourbon, por ejemplo) as well as some interesting original concoctions from the PDT menu. Some of the boutique items, such as complicated syrups and infused versions of liquors, have detailed instructions on how to go about making your own version at home -- which is quite thoughtful and a mitzvah. The illustrations are whimsical and fun, and the book has the feel of something worth having -- it is nicely bound and solid in a way that few books are these days. It even has a nice satin-feeling bookmark so you don't have to dog-ear pages to remember where you want to go for the next round once you're a few drinks in.

There are, however, several downsides to this book, in my opinion. First, and probably most relevant, is that specific makes and models are suggested for each liquor in each drink. This would be fine, if the authors indicated the rationale for the suggested bottle and provided some guidance on substitution suggestions. Because they fail to explain WHY they choose a specific vintage (Beefeater gin for this drink, Hayman's Old Tom for that one), the reader is left with the impression that one needs 30 different bottles of gin to make 30 different drinks. This approach may make sense for a fancy cocktail bar in Manhattan, but the authors have now ventured into non-enterprise cocktail making, and they need to be more reasonable about what the amateur cocktailier knows and can reasonably access as she or he plays with these very inventive recipes.

The other somewhat major challenge with the book is the fact that the drinks themselves are never pictured. Over the past year I've been working my way through many of the recipes in Esquire magazine's classic "The Drink Book", and this has been my biggest frustration -- for some obscure drinks with boutique ingredients, one never quite knows if you've gotten it "right". In the absence of lickable paper or a buddy who makes all the classics and can critique your technique, the best way for a novice to benchmark their end results is to have a picture of what a finished version of the cocktail looks like (well, that and drink it and see if it's delicious). Those images, even in illustration form, are decidedly absent from this book, which feels like a bad editorial decision.

There are other minor items that could have transformed this good book into a great book. When I blog about cocktails, I often try to provide some context for the drink to help guide people to something that they might like -- this drink is on the sweeter side, that one has a more tropical feel, this other is probably most appropriate for someone who loves a good belt of Scotch early in the morning, whatever, just something to give people a little organizer in their heads around what they might experience in the drink. Those discussion are missing from this (and most) cocktail books, much to my chagrin.

Overall, these little oversights (or editorial omissions) add up, and by the end the book sums up to less than it could have been. And yet...despite the challenges, it remains a good book with great recipes that will no doubt distinguish itself among the din of cocktail books entering the market this year. Its definitely worth having, but if you're a true newbie in this space, I'd start off with Dale Degroff's book and work your way up to this one.

At first I disliked it, but then...

Let's get the obvious out of the way: this book is beautiful, with an extensive list of drinks and an enviable pedigree. Regardless of anything else I write in this review, this is a lovely gift for anyone even vaguely interested in the cocktail arts.

But I must admit that my initial reaction was a sigh. I received the book as a gift and immediately started flipping through to see the recipes, only to find a plethora of prescribed brands and obscure ingredients. It was disheartening.

At first. What I realized later was that I'd been hoping for a true beginner's cocktail book, something of a primer with flexibility in ingredient choice. And for that purpose, I can't really recommend the PDT book. It's advanced - delightfully so - but it will be overwhelming to someone who doesn't already know their way around the classics (and some popular moderns, too).

However, as an intermediate or advanced cocktail book, the PDT book is wonderful. It really introduces you to a new suite of ingredients and the brand specifics do act as a nice starting point for the recipes. I think substitutions and suggestions would have been nice or, at the very least, some reasons for why the specific brands were picked, but that's excusable due to inventiveness of the recipes.

TL;DR - This is a great book, but it's not an appropriate first for an aspiring cocktailian to build their basic repertoire. For that, go check out The Joy of Mixology instead. Nevertheless, the PDT book DOES have a place on every bartender's bookshelf for when the basics just don't cut it anymore.

A nice, visual collection of the Usual Suspects

My German cookbook shelf is, I admit, rather extensive. In addition to buying just about every reasonable option I could find, I've taken to buying German cookbooks in the native language -- especially if they're for things I know perfectly well I'll never make. (I have a traditional pastries book that's a case in point, but I like _imagining_ I'll bake them.) So I was a bit surprised to find this cookbook at my local library: wow, a book I don't own! It's very nice indeed, though not a must-have -- at least not for me.

The cookbook promises to be, basically, Grandma's home cookin' -- and that's what you get. There's no attempt towards modernity, or variations on traditional dishes (the biggest exception I can find is beef roulades with hard-boiled eggs inside instead of dill pickles). That's perfectly fine, if you're looking for a good basic collection of German food -- accompanied by attractive photos, since this _is_ a DK publication.

The cookbook is organized by type of meal: soups and stews; everyday meals; Sunday dinners; sweet main courses and desserts; cakes and cookies; jams, jellies, and preserves. I found most of the "usual" dishes among the hundred-or-so included here, such as green bean, pear, and bacon stew; stuffed peppers; Rhine saurbraten with potato dumplings; goulash. And a few that we rarely see here in a German restaurant but are common in Germany: cheese spätzle; mushroom goulash with bread dumplings, maultaschen (Germany's answer to ravioli).

If you have a German grandma (or wish you did) you'll find the recipes themselves comfortably satisfying. They may not be EXACTLY how you remember it (as the maultaschen recipe headnote comments, "There's only one true recipe for Swabian meat-filled pasta pouches -- and each family has a different one") but I'm sure you'll like it.

Frankly at this point I have enough German cookbooks that I don't feel the need add another Basics to my set. But if I were shopping for a good starter cookbook to give to a friend, I easily could choose this one. You'll probably be very happy with it.

Fantastic

These are the recipes I ate growing up in a German Canadian community. The book is fun to read and the recipes are varied and delicious (so far). Cooked the Weiner Goulash recipe tonight and we wanted to drink the sauce out of the dutch oven - it was so good. Not particularly gourmet or light in style (did you expect "lite" German food?) but everything is made from scratch, directions are clear and there are wonderful photos and stories accompanying the recipes. My only complaint is the index seems to list dishes, alphabetically by title only. Still, I give this 5 stars because it's such delightful cookbook and I've yet to see anything else resembling it on the market. I'm so happy these two authors collaborated and created this cookbook.

A special gift of authentic, often heirloom, German recipes

If you are looking for a German cookbook, this might be just what you're looking for. There are a lot of authentic, traditional recipes--NOT Americanized. Some of the recipes are from three, four generations back. There are all the German recipes you expect, plus many that you may not be familiar with. There are some old-time techniques also, and that makes for some very interesting times in the kitchen. These are old-time gourmet recipes, NOT new and innovative takes on traditional German food.

Besides the authors sharing so many old and very authentic recipes, here are some things I liked about the cookbook: Great pictures of every recipe, very vibrant colors; information on where the recipes originated; interesting stories associated with many of the recipes; most everything is "from scratch" (you won't see any canned goods in the ingredient lists, except maybe a store-bought fresh pasta or bouillon cubes here or there), and I really appreciated the terrific (though few) fruit and veggie jams, butters and pickles.

What I didn't like and why I knocked it down a star: It has a very poor index--such a shame. Also, the authors' writing is a bit "home-grown" and in no way sophisticated.

I'm still very happy to have this book in my collection. The old recipes are very special, and I greatly appreciate the authors sharing them.

About the Author
Brian Ashcraft is a senior contributing editor for the video-game site Kotaku. Ashcraft was previously a contributing editor at Wired magazine; his work has also appeared in Popular Science, the Guardian, the Japan Times, and the design journal Metropolis, as well as numerous other publications worldwide. He is the author of Arcade Mania! and Japanese Schoolgirl Confidential. Originally from Texas, he has called Osaka home for well over a decade.

Hori Benny was born in Minneapolis and moved to Japan in 2002. Two years later he settled in Osaka and began a tattoo apprenticeship at Chopstick Tattoo. In 2014 he formed his own studio, Invasion Club, near Osaka's otaku cultural center in Nipponbashi. He does custom work in a variety of genres.

Trying to put all the details or history of tattooing ...

Trying to put all the details or history of tattooing in Japan into a book is basically impossible. Instead you are going to be able to get a glimpse at quite a few styles and aspects of the art as it exists in Japan. I think the stand out point for this book would be the interviews. Hori Benny is an Osaka staple in the tattooing community and without him none of these interviews would've been able to happen (let alone all in one spot!).

Brilliant. Glad to see something like this finally come out. It doesn't over-romanticize Japan, like many books do, but rather provides a comprehensive and stimulating exploration of Japanese tattoo culture, influencing factors and history. Awesome artwork as one would expect from something of this calibre.

The New Authority on the Japanese Tattoo--Past, Present & Future

​In his fourth book, Japanese Tattoos: History * Culture * Design, Brian Ashcraft teams up with Osaka artist Hori Benny to tackle a traditionally dense subject and make it accessible to everyone. While there are other books covering the subject, this is easily the most approachable.

The book is available in digital and paperback formats; for the purposes of this view, I relied mostly on my paperback copy. That said, one advantage of the digital version is that you can zoom in on the photos. However, this doesn't take away from the paperback version, which is printed in full colour on good quality paper.

Inside, the text is immediately engaging. The introduction is extensive, providing background on the history and culture of tattoos, and how the latter has changed. This makes a solid foundation for first chapter, which covers kanji tattoos and takes the reader much further back than they might expect! Did you know that before being used for punishment, tattoos could denote rank, or social status? That they were sometimes used to mark pledges, or to identify fallen warriors? Or maybe you're looking to get a kanji tattoo, yourself--advice on that can be found here, too.

The next three chapters cover other designs and motifs common to the artform. Every example is provided with an in-depth explanation of its significance and history, complete with pictorial examples. Often, idiosyncrasies of language that might be lost on a non-native speaker are brought to light. Instead of dry exposition that would leave some simply skimming through the photos, you have passionate writing that seeks to share information written in such a fashion that you can't help but feel the authors want you to develop the same enthusiasm they already have.

The fifth chapter, The Full Bodysuit, is best described in its own introductory text: "The bodysuit is the fullest expression of irezumi." Once again, any preconceptions the reader might have are challenged, here. The different types of bodysuit are explored (yes, there are several!), their layouts and borders. When the entire body is being used as a canvas, everything has meaning.

The sixth and final chapter covers how tattoos and even the methods of tattooing have changed over time. As patterns and styles were passed down from master to apprentice, new designs have flourished along classic motifs, while still adhering to the rules of irezumi. Geek tattoos (also known as otatoo, a word coined by co-author Hori Benny) began to appear in the past few decades, while still reflecting the values and interests of modern life.

While not a section unto itself, I also appreciated the tattooist and client profiles scattered throughout the book. More than any other, this is an industry and artform that requires people. I think that's what makes this book so special. All of the parts come together to show that this is a living, storied art made possible by the lives dedicated to it. My writing of service and how-to journalism has always been guided by the belief that given the reasons why, folks are more likely to do the job right than if simply told how to go about some esoteric task. Knowledge converts the drudgery of work into understanding. Understanding puts you in control, which is where you should be as the owner/operator of your very own water and sewage system. I also believe that no matter who the reader--from novice to expert--that person should enjoy the read and learn something. "How-to" books are about work; reading the book shouldn't be. So while ensuring that my writing is jam-packed with good information and tricks of the appropriate trades, it's important to me that the book (whether one of mine or one I am reading) also be a good read. Respect for the environment, too, is another theme that runs through my service journalism. an excellent book on the basics of dock design/construction

This is for sure a very good "do it yourself" book. There is no doubt that it is a "must have" for those building their own dock/jetty. The author, Max Burns, has written an excellent book on the basics of dock design and construction that is surprisingly comprehensive but still practical. It is one of the two "only" books I have ever seen on recreational/residential dock construction. I think the way the book was able to streamline and summarize the various technical bits and pieces, although being targeted at the beginner to intermediate designer/builder, does not stop it from being a very useful and informative book to most people. Each chapter is short and readable; the subject matter is directly applicable to real life situations and is not written in a typical textbook manner. I think Sections 2 and 3 on dock types and building provide a hard-to-find and up-to-date overview on various related issues. The graphs and drawings are easy to interpret, and I believe are essential to understanding the key points. Coming from a construction/environmental background I found the inserts/information boxes on the environmental impacts and construction considerations to be written in a way that is very easy to understand and quick to pick-up. Yes, this for sure a very good book to have on the subject of dock design and construction. It is also a model for writers to follow on how to simplify a technical subject, which in many instances can be gruesomely complex, to an easily "digestible" read so people from different walks of life can enjoy it in a practical way and put it to use.

Save Your Money

This insult is not for the reader, but for the book; if you learned anything from this book , you have no business considering building a dock yourself. I already knew the difference between a screw and a nail and I'm pretty good at spotting the difference between wood and plastic, yet these are major points covered in this book. You will learn considerably more by simply walking along any waterfront and carefully observing those structures that stick out into the water.
Seriously, it's not that this book is too basic, it's that this book doesn't adequately address any of the issues you'll need to face to actually design, submit for approval and construct even the most basic dock. It adequately warns against the dangers of incompetant contractors, but not incompetant authors.

"The Dock Manual" tells you everything you need to know about designing, building and maintaining a small residential dock. It is an extremely well written and enjoyable book to read and is loaded with beautiful line drawings and photographs.
There are extensive sections on the different types of docks, materials, tools, hardware and building techniques. The section on connecting your dock to the shore was worth buying on its own! The section on designing your dock was short but there are pictures and drawings of various types of docks scattered throughout the book.
I've gotten many "do it yourself" type of books from Amazon and I think "The Dock Manual" is one of the best! If you have a dock, are planning on building a dock or just dreaming of it then you will LOVE this book!

Easily earned money ...

This book is a big disappointment; I am actively working in the PDM/PLM market for over 15 years and I have given many training and educational workshops; I was leading the ESPRIT RapidPDM project. Even though I reviewed the book from an educational perspective, to my opinion the book is nothing more as a summary of topics; the authors have not succeeded in getting their 'thing' and experience transferred to the pages. There are better books and even better articles around (e.g. Gartner, Cimdata, Forrester, John Stark to name a few).

So why 2 stars you might ask: well that's because the authors have included metrics and that's an important fact!

An excellent approach that exposes the reader to the PLM world

I liked the way the author has laid out the chapters, each covering the different components of PLM. This book is definitely a good starting material for newbies into PLM. But I expected more explanation for many of the topics. The content of most topics seem to be superficial.

Book Review 'Product Lifecycle Management'

My search for books on PLM concepts and philosophy led to this particular book. Frankly, apart from this one there are only two other books on the subject. One by Michael Grieves and the other by John Stark. Over the last 8 years, I have worked on the implementation and maintenance of PLM solutions i.e. the customization of the commercially available PLM product. So I was looking for more of a textbook on PLM which would explain the details/nuances of key functionalities of any PLM product such as item/structure management, product portfolio management, change management & workflow, configuration management and document management. I wanted to understand what these mean, how these are typically used by various customers thru examples.
This book did explain those key functionalities viz. product structures, item/structure management and change management. But the book talks about PLM more from a strategic and management perspective. It clarified my understanding of the product process and order-delivery process. The challenges of product management in manufacturing and how PLM can help in meeting those challenges are explained very well by means of 3 case studies for different product types.
I saw the value of the book in the excellent overview of a typical product lifecycle model and how the product and product management strategy is closely linked to the business strategy. With a good product management strategy implemented in a PLM solution, management should be able to take business decisions about launching, introducing new variants, discontinuing products based on the data from the PLM solution.
I would say that this book is a must read for the senior management team viz. CEO, CIO, business unit owners, program and project managers, who are thinking about a PLM initiative in their company. It is essential for them to understand that a lot of home work has to be done by the organization itself to define a clear product management strategy, before they zero in on a commercial product and contract with a vendor to implement the PLM solution. Techies and novices to the world of PLM can read this to understand what PLM does and how it is used by the users in different organization verticals.

Thorough Overview

This book provides the radio amateur with everything that he/she needs to know to get started in JT65 and JT9. It is written at a level that most hams will understand, leaving the technical nuts and bolts for exploration later. Because everyone's situation is different, it doesn't cover 100% of what you will need to get on the air, but most hams can fill in the blanks with ease. There are plenty of screenshots to help you get started. There is also a good discussion of what to expect once you are on the air.
